UFC: Top 10 Most Anticipated UFC Fights for the Summer and Fall

Jake MartinMay 31, 2018

After UFC 133 takes place on August 6, the UFC will have four huge PPVs in a row. The cards for UFC 134-137 look to be phenomenal with a lot of big-time fights taking place.

The top pound-for-pound fighters will be seeing action through these PPVs and they all are facing very interesting challenges. The UFC isn't holding back from the fans for the next couple of months, so I thought I'd give my take on the most anticipated fights for the rest of the summer and fall.

10. Anthony Pettis vs. Jeremy Stephens (UFC 136)

1 of 10

What this fight lacks in name value, it makes up for with the matchup stylistically. Stephens is always looking for a good brawl, and he's found himself a good matchup to stand and trade.

Pettis doesn't fear standing and trading with anyone as he has some of the most dynamic and lethal strikes at lightweight. Both guys will stand and exchange with each other, and that should make for an instant classic with both of these guys' ability.

Not to mention the pure excitement factor of not knowing what Pettis will try to pull off next.

9. Jim Miller vs. Ben Henderson (UFC on Versus 5)

2 of 10

To put it plain and simple, Jim Miller deserves a title shot. Miller is on a seven-fight win streak and has looked very impressive, particularly in his last two fights against Kamal Shalorus and Charles Oliveira.

Due to the Frankie Edgar-Gray Maynard saga and UFC merging with WEC, Miller hasn't gotten a title shot and now he faces a very good opponent in Ben Henderson.

This is a great fight between two very talented lightweights. Miller has great submission and, as we all know, Henderson has great escapes. Can't wait to see these two mix it up.

8. Matt Hughes vs. Diego Sanchez (UFC 135)

3 of 10

When's the last time Diego Sanchez was in a bad fight? The guy is just crazy and brings it in every single fight. Now he meets the Hall of Famer, Matt Hughes, in a pivotal matchup at 170 pounds.

Hughes is coming off of a devastating KO loss to B.J. Penn, and he'll have to win to keep Dana White from cueing the curtains on his career. We know how that's been lately.

Sanchez, on the other hand, is looking to land a title shot at welterweight after back-to-back wins over Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann. The Kampmann fight was a three-round war, and I expect this to be no different.

7. Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann (UFC 136)

4 of 10

He's baaaaaack…Chael Sonnen makes his Octagon return against Brian Stann, who has been on a tear recently.

I'm not a huge fan of the matchup due to Stann wanting to keep the fight standing and Sonnen wanting to take it to the ground. Sonnen should take this fight to the ground with ease, but with the way Stann has been rapidly evolving, it would come as no surprise if he stuffs a few takedowns.

I had to put this fight on the list just because Stann is turning into a star and everyone is itching to see Sonnen back in the Octagon after nearly dethroning Anderson Silva.

6. Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami II (UFC 134)

5 of 10

Their first fight ended in a disqualification, and now Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami will settle unfinished business in Brazil in August.

Okami possesses potential problems for Silva, as he is great at getting the fight where he wants it. It's no secret Okami wants to get it to the ground, and Silva will do what he can to keep this fight on the feet.

The fact that Okami has been training with Sonnen makes this fight that more intriguing.

5. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Forrest Griffin II (UFC 134)

6 of 10

Forrest Griffin shocked the world when he upset Shogun Rua four years ago by submitting him in the third round. Now Rua is coming for payback, and Griffin is putting himself in line for a title shot should he upset Rua again.

I expect this fight to be more exciting than the first, as Rua will be hungry to get his hands on Griffin after their first fight and find his way back to Jon Jones. This fight has everything from name value, excitement value and both guys' styles really match up well. Expect the unexpected.

4. Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian (UFC 136)

7 of 10

Is the third time the charm for Kenny Florian? Florian is 0-2 in title fights, but this time he's fighting at featherweight and will take on his toughest challenge yet in Jose Aldo.

Aldo is phenomenal. He's good at every phase of the game when it comes to MMA and I don't know if there's a more explosive fighter out there.

It's only fitting to have Florian fight him in a big-time co-main event. I've watched Florian since the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, and I really feel like this is the pinnacle of his career. It's make-or-break time for Florian.

3. Jon Jones vs. Rampage Jackson (UFC 135)

8 of 10

When Jon Jones first became the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, I instantly thought of all the exciting matchups that were in store for him as a champion and the first guy that came to mind was Quintin "Rampage" Jackson.

Both guys have great stand-up and great wrestling, so I knew it would be a really fun matchup. Jones has the advantage in striking because of how dynamic he is, but we've never seen his chin tested. We know for a fact that Jackson can take a shot as well as dish it. The only question is will he be able to connect with Jones' chin with how elusive he is.

Get ready for some more "black-on-black crime."

2. Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz (UFC 137)

9 of 10

This is a champion vs. champion matchup and when the fight was first announced, I immediately shouted "finally!"

Finally, someone will get in GSP's face and make him fight. Not everyone was as pleased with the matchup as I was and people began to say GSP will do what he always does, and that's take him down for five rounds. OK, even if he does, Diaz has the jiu-jitsu to keep GSP cautious on the ground and not be able to just stay in Diaz's guard without defending submission attempts.

When it comes to the stand-up, Diaz will get in his face and talk as much trash as possible while point boxing. This is not going to be an easy fight for GSP and he better bring it if he wants to retain his belt.

1. Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III (UFC 136)

10 of 10

How good was Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard II earlier this year? That's the leading contender in taking Fight of the Year honors, and I can't wait to see these two go at it one more time.

Edgar and Maynard are so evenly matched and match up so well against each other. Edgar has the speed advantage, while Maynard has the power advantage and both guys have amazing wrestling skills. I expect another five-round war between these two with a more clear winner this time around.
