WWE SummerSlam 2011: Top 5 Matches Likely to Happen

Justin WatryJun 4, 2018

WWE is heating up right now, and I mean...HEAT-ING-UP!

The past few months have been hot, but it can only get hotter from here. The next WWE pay-per-view is SummerSlam and it has already gotten tons of buzz, with plenty more to come.

With this biggest part of the summer just a few weeks away, what better time to check out all of our options for what could occur then right here, right now? There are a few "gimme matches" that are guaranteed to take place, and a few that may surprise you when it comes to which bouts will go down in Los Angeles on August 14th.

WWE Summerslam 2011: Sheamus vs. Mark Henry

1 of 5

In my eyes, Sheamus has slowly been turning face ever since his move to SmackDown. It was his next logical step. He ran through most of the roster as a dominant heel, and now it is time for him to get the fans on his side.

What better opponent for him than a man who has recently turned heel? What better opponent for him than a man who has just moved to SmackDown? What better opponent for him than a man who is even bigger in size than Sheamus? What better opponent for him than Mark Henry?

The World's Strongest Man may go down as one of the most under-appreciated athletes in WWE history. Having been employed now for well over 10 years, this is a man who has shown the skills to be a top Superstar.

While big men may never get the credit they deserve inside the ring, outside of the ring, Henry is just as powerful. With Sheamus just about complete with his face turn of being a "newbie" to the WWE SmackDown scene (been on WWE TV just over two years), this seems like a perfect match up for both.

WWE Summerslam 2011: Kelly Kelly vs Eve

2 of 5

Currently, Kelly Kelly is the WWE Diva's champion. That may soon change as next week on Raw, there is a battle royal to determine her opponent come SummerSlam.

Despite the fact Alicia Fox is on the SummerSlam poster, while Beth Phoenix has had her eye on the title for awhile now, Eve makes most sense to win come Monday night. She has been hanging around Kelly Kelly a lot lately and is from Los Angeles—the site of the pay-per-view in August.

I expect the usual match between the two—solid, not amazing. Rest assure, there will be ONE diva's match come SummerSlam.

WWE Summerslam 2011: The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio

3 of 5

While it may not be his most flattering picture of his life, that is The Miz.Since losing the WWE title to John Cena at Extreme Rules, some have said The Miz has been on a downward spiral. If you ask me, I do not see it that way at all.

Right now, Miz is in a great spot, and his loss to Alex Riley means nothing. They were meant to help Riley, not harm the Miz.

Case in point, where is Alex Riley right now? Exactly!

Onto who will pair up with The Miz come SummerSlam, it has to be "Mr. 619", Rey Mysterio. He has put on great match after great match and is doing all of that on a bum knee with likely more injuries the world will never know about.

This match is perfect for the card, as it allows Miz to run around Los Angeles, hit up the media tours and blast Rey Rey about hiding behind a mask. Come show-time, though, Mysterio will have the crowd right on his side. Perfect heel, Perfect face. I'd even throw a No. 1 contender's slot on the line here, as last Monday night was a chaotic evening for the Championship scene.

WWE Summerslam 2011: Christian vs. Randy Orton, NO DQ Rules

4 of 5

I am not much of a "fantasy booker" online, but this storyline has been done to near perfection. With the way Christian won the title, then losing the title, to his defenses against Orton, to how Teddy Long has been acting, to Christian getting "his" title back.

Everything, great.

Sadly, all good things must come to an end and this feud has to come to an end at one of these pay-per-views, likely this one. While a "NO DQ" match is the next logical step (based on Christian and Orton's past), I really thought WWE would bring in Edge here to be the guest referee. Edge will already be in Los Angeles the day before the show for media appearances, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal to ask him to stay an extra day and get an extra paycheck.

That would add another "special" selling point to the biggest PPV of the summer.

Either way, this match is near lock to take place, and outside of the final match on my list, this is the one I am looking forward to the most...

WWE Summerslam 2011: CM Punk vs. John Cena

5 of 5

Sorry John! Los Angeles will treat you, just as Chicago did.

At last month's Money in the Bank, the crowd was absolutely off the charts. They booed Cena and cheered CM Punk like there was no tomorrow. While the atmosphere and the audience will not be topped come August 14th, hopefully, the in-ring action will top Money in the Bank.

I do not even need to explain the angle going on here—Real Champion vs. Fake Champion, Punk vs. Cena—the rematch!

My thoughts on this match, and the entire PPV are summed up best by Bart Scott of the NFL's New York Jets—Can't Wait!
