WWE: CM Punk and the Worst Theme Song Ever

William GulloJun 7, 2018

Here's an excerpt from the beginning of CM Punk's supposed new theme "Cult of Personality"

". . . And during the few moments that we have left, . . . We want to talk right down to earth in a language that everybody here can easily understand."

In the spirit of that quote let me say this: This song is lame!

Wait! just Stop! I know what you're going to say...

Ring of Honor, man...

The music fits his new character cause he's got a cult following and he's got personality...

He's no longer associating himself with WWE so he changed his music to reflect his past promotion as a kick in the (insert whatever makes you smile) to the WWE.

Don't you get it?

Yeah, I get it...

I also get that he had the single greatest intro already.

The insane guitar riff that hammers you in the face until your nose bleeds. The black, green, red, and yellow fist shaking on the titan-tron clutching a bolt of lightning while a scream awakens the inner bad guy in all of us

The lull in the music as Punk does his best Russell Crowe from Gladiator; sweeping his hands along the ramp entrance feeling the hallowed battle grounds that many of the former greats have fought on.

Then as the music begins to build back up again he shouts to the heavens and throws his fist into the air as the soundtrack gets its second life.

We did all watch the same entrance from Money in the Bank? Right?

The wrestling community can tell me that it gets better than that? With Cult of Personalty in its place?

While I already feel as though I'm in the minority on this issue, please feel free to prove me wrong or right by clicking on the poll.

As the Miz would say "You all like the Cult of Personality as CM Punk's new theme, really? really?...really?"

So what exactly is a cult of personality?

"

A cult of personality arises when an individual uses mass media, propaganda, or other methods, to create an idealized and heroic public image, often through unquestioning flattery and praise. Cults of personality are usually associated with dictatorships.

The sociologist Max Weber developed a tripartite classification of authority; the cult of personality holds parallels with what Weber defined as 'charismatic authority.'

A cult of personality is similar to hero worship, except that it is established by mass media and propaganda. However, the term may be applied by analogy to refer to adulation of religious or non-political leaders.

While the cult of personality generally applies to the enhancement and promotion of a political or religious doctrine, it stands to reason that it is also asserted in everyday situations where popularity is used to advocate conformity to philosophies and lifestyles, even products and attitudes by way of peer pressure and herd mentality.

Well that was educational, and certainly sums up CM Punk's new angle perfectly, but who cares if the songs meaning fits him perfectly?

Three Quick Reasons why this is terrible

1. "This Fire Burns" is already burned into the heads of people who have followed Punk in his WWE career. You all saw it... 99 percent of the people had no clue what was going on during his return to Raw. Imagine if his original music played; the roof would have snapped in two.

2. It's a much better song (In a wrestling entrance sense)

3. I'd much rather go to battle with "This Fire Burns" blazing over the battlefield, everyone running together screaming and ramped up rather then prance out to Cult of Personality!

Personality cults often focuses on the regimes of Fidel Castro, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Hirohito, Mao Zedong,  Muammar Gaddafi, Kim Il-Sung, Kim Jong-Il...

...and apparently CM Punk now!

Raise your hand if you thought you'd read the name Adolf Hitler on the Bleacher Report today...

CM Punk has now become this hot commodity, and is the first wrestler in a long time to get a mass audience outside of the WWE realm. People who hadn't heard his name are now interested in the man who has begun to break the walls down around the WWE empire.

Do we really need to tag him with a lame entrance song so people can say "ahhh I get it, he's an underground leader...cult of personality, that's clever, I liked that song!"...

...in 1989! The song won a Grammy that year for "Best Hard Rock Performance"... Today's hard rock (Killswitch Engage) makes that song seem like it was performed by the Wiggles.

Don't get me wrong; I love Living Colour's "Cult of Personality". It really is a great song, but not for the leader of the underground revolution.

Dear CM Punk:

I am with you as a follower, and will remain with you until we can no longer journey together. I, along with your other followers chanting your name, ask that we not be associated with a hard rock song from the 80's... leave that to Hulk Hogan and his maniacs.

We are different. We are not the corporate marketing machine who tailors to kids and the families, we are the revolution, the new era of wrestling! We want a theme that will punch you in the face, and then laugh while it sticks its fist in the air, catches a bolt of lightning and stabs you in the heart!

Best Regards,

William Gullo
