WWE: Did CM Punk Make His Comeback to the Ring Too Soon?

David LevinJul 26, 2011

How can you argue with the strategy of the WWE? Well, I’ll take that back, mainly because a lot of the things done over the past few months have been questionable at best.

But with last night’s appearance of CM Punk, how can u doubt the creative team knows what it is doing?

Again, take a moment and soak that in.

When Triple H, the creative team for RAW and the management decided to make two world title matches in one night, bring back Jim Ross and re-introduce the fans and the IWC to John Morrison, it showed they were committed to changing the direction of a stagnant company.

But the end of the show Monday night may have proved to be as bold a move as possible with the return of CM Punk back to the fold.

My, what a tangled web they weave in the spirit of professional wrestling.

Punk’s appearance after John Cena reclaimed the WWE title from Rey Mysterio (who I feel deserved a better fate than he got last night and deserved a chance to defend his title at SummerSlam in his home state of California), it was not only epic, it was the drama that needed to continue after Vince McMahon was “fired” last week.

The problem or “issue” I have with the idea of bringing back the most popular heel in wrestling right now is the timing. Keeping Punk away until after SummerSlam would have built more momentum or let everything rest.

Mysterio should have challenged Cena at the PPV and then, in the midst of the celebration for Cena, Punk reappears.

Just a thought. I mean, what do I know? I’m just a wrestling writer.

But there is so much stroke right now with Punk appearing all over the place, including independent shows, Comic-Con and wherever he can generate more popularity, it would not have hurt for the WWE to keep him under wraps for a few more weeks.

And because there were more cheers for Punk when he raised his world title than Cena when he did the same, it shows that Punk is the one everyone would like to see carry the strap and hold on to it for a bit, which is probably the best thing for the company right now.

While Cena moves merchandise, I get the sense people are tired of his gimmick.

He is too vanilla, too mom and apple pie. While kids love his shtick, the adults want something more with and edge (What’s Up?).

And when the two were in the ring, trying not to laugh at each other, it showed that the best plan is not always the one you play out in the ring.

Punk is "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Cena is Bob Backlund before Hulk Hogan. Both popular in their own way and a great draw if given the chance.

I am now curious how championship unification will work and if Cena wins, does this mean the WWE Universe will turn on him. Hulk Hogan was great for years with the train, players and vitamins routine. But as people got older and the climate in the business changed, people changed too. It will be the same thing with Cena.

Changes need to continue. Creative teams need to flow. And most of all, the fans need to be satisfied in the seats, on the Internet and at the PPV events or the decisions maybe the new regime will mean nothing.
