The Most Awkward and Uncomfortable Moments in MMA History (with Video)
Just like any other sport, MMA has it's awkward moments.
The athletic ability required to be a mixed martial artist is immense, however linguistic skills are not mandatory and that is an area in which many fighters are severely lacking.
As much as we love seeing a competitor fight, it can excruciating to watch them man the microphone afterwards.
That said, awkward scenarios can arise in many more places than just post-fight interviews, as you will soon find out.
Let's take a look at some of the most awkward and uncomfortable moments in MMA history...
Charles Oliveira Has a Unique Way of Dealing with Getting Hit in the Groin
1 of 20It's always an unfortunate and difficult thing to watch, when a fighter gets hit in the groin.
It's not unusual for a fighter to jump around a bit and do a bit of rubbing after being struck with a low blow.
However, it is rather unusual for a fighter to stick their hand down their pants after suffering a low blow, as you will see Chales Oliveira do in the video.
We all probably didn't need to see that, Charles.
And I doubt Efrain Escudero was pleased with the idea of being punched by a hand that was just in someone's shorts.
Dave Kaplan Asks Tom Lawlor to Punch Him and Gets Knocked out
2 of 20Some men just don't know their own limits.
After excessively bragging about how he can't be knocked out, Dave Kaplan begs TUF teammate Tom Lawlor to punch him in the face.
Tom, who fights three weight classes above Dave, reluctantly agrees and the punch knocks Kaplan completely unconscious.
This was a pretty funny thing to watch for the viewers at home, but no doubt it was an uncomfortable experience for Lawlor.
The funniest part was that after regaining consciousness, Dave tried to say that he didn't get knocked out.
*Sorry, video embedding disabled for this one, but you can still watch it on Youtube.
Diego Sanchez Screams "Yes" Repeatedly During Walkout
3 of 20Diego Sanchez is an eccentric dude.
In his last few fights Diego has taken to screaming "yes" while making his entrances. I'm not sure the exact purpose of the exercise, but my understanding is that it provides him with positive reinforcement and is meant to give him a mental edge.
Helpful though this screaming may be to Sanchez, it is an unnerving thing to watch.
David Gardner Gets Rear Naked Choked After Waving to Someone in the Crowd
4 of 20Some of the things on this list are awkward for the viewers and some are awkward for the participants. This on is the latter.
While fighting Shinya Aoki, David Gardner gives up his back.
You think with a Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert on your back, you would want to be very careful.
Gardner, however, seems entirely carefree as he waves to a crowd member.
This unexpected gesture leaves his neck completely exposed and Shinya takes advtantage.
This was probably extremely embarrassing for Gardner and it probably didn't help that one of the announcers blatantly mocks him.
Gina Carano Suffers Through Wildly Inappropriate Interview
5 of 20This isn't a case of a fighter doing anything awkward, but being subject to an awkward interviewer in the form of Wai Ting.
Apart from being generally unprofessional (reading questions off his blackberry), Ting also makes this interview very uncomfortable by asking a series of inappropriate questions.
Here are some samples of Wai's journalistic dynamite:
Do you get hit on more or less now that you are famous?
Do you wear make up when you fight?
Who do you think is the ugliest MMA fighter?
Would you ever fighter a transgender fighter?
Carano does her best to stay composed and answer the questions carefully, but it doesn't stop the interview from being very uncomfortable to watch.
Also, the interview is extremely detrimental to the growth of women's MMA, given that all of the questions centered around gender and appearance. It would be hard for someone unfamiliar with women's MMA to take it seriously if they were to only see this interview.
Krzysztof Soszynski Performs an "Oil Check" on Goran Reljic
6 of 20I apologize for the mildly obnoxious guy who's filming this, but it was the only video I could find.
While clinching with Goran Reljic, Krzysztof Soszynski grabs Goran's butt while jockeying for position and the crowd quickly reacts with disapproval.
UFC commentator Joe Rogan also notices the butt-grab and comments that Krzysztof is performing an "oil-check".
Funny for us, but terribly embarrassing for Soszynski.
Quinton Jackson Humps a Reporter
7 of 20In this video a reporter makes the mistake of telling Quinton Jackson that she has an idea for a romantic comedy starring her and Quinton.
While her comment may have been mildly flirtatious, Jackson takes it a step too far by grabbing her and proceeding to hump away.
The reporter does her best to keep the interview rolling and make it seem like nothing is going wrong, but when Quinton just keeps humping her it gets really awkward.
What starts as a joke turns into Rampage being really creepy.
Women Is a Bit Too Fond of Her GSP Doll
8 of 20This is one of the hardest to watch on the whole list.
Basically, a female fan brings a Georges St-Pierre doll to a press conference and repeatedly implies that she does things of a sexual nature with it.
St-Pierre did not seem at all put off by the woman's remarks and rather amused by the doll, perhaps pretending he didn't know what the woman was getting at to avoid making the situation worse.
Tito Ortiz: Good Fighter, Bad at Interviews
9 of 20This is a compilation video of Tito Ortiz interviewing other fighters.
The video pretty much speaks for itself.
Basically, Ortiz seems nervous whenever he's talking and that causes him to speak very quickly and jumble his words.
Chuck Liddell's Good Morning Texas Interview
10 of 20When Chuck Liddell appeared on Good Morning Texas to promote the film 300 he was not himself, 'The Iceman's' statements throughout the interview were mostly incomprehensible, a fact that was later attributed to: (via TheFightNetwork)
""UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell's incoherent appearance on the AM TV Talk Show 'Good Morning Texas,' was attributed to illness commented both Liddell and his longtime trainer John Hackleman to The Fight Network this afternoon.
‘I am sick and rundown and need to get back to training,' Liddell emailed me this afternoon. Trainer Hackleman says Liddell has a sinus infection and took the sleep medication Nyquil at 4 AM to try and get rest."
"
The interviewer has to ask Liddell multiple times in the interview if he's doing okay, as it looks as if Chuck is about to pass out.
Rich Franklin Gives Matt Serra Horrible Advice
11 of 20While Matt Serra was preparing for a fight on the fourth season of The Ultimate Fighter, Rich Franklin popped by the gym to offer some advice.
Rich basically tells Serra that he should frequently drop to one knee and throw punches from there, that way his opponent can't kick him.
While it's true that his opponent wouldn't be able to kick Serra, he would still be vulnerable to punches and it would make it more difficult for Matt to land his own punches.
Whether or not Franklin was just screwing with Matt, I'm not sure.
This one is awkward because it's obvious that Serra thinks Rich's advice is stupid, but tries to be nice about it anyways, all the while Franklin is surprisingly insistent that the strategy will work.
BJ Penn and Jens Pulver Pick Teams for the Ultimate Fighter 5
12 of 20Sorry, couldn't find video for this one.
BJ Penn and Jens Pulver were the coaches for the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter.
When picking teams BJ avoided usual procedure and asked any fighter who knew they wanted nothing to do with Pulver to raise their hand.
Much to Jens' dismay, more than half the fighters raised their hands.
It was an ugly situation and Jens did his best to keep his pride by saying he didn't want to work with those fighters anyways and that they should work with Penn.
The incident was a nightmare for UFC President Dana White, who was noticeably frustrated by the end of it.
UFC 1... Pretty Much the Whole Thing
13 of 20Looking back on it today, UFC 1 was a terribly produced event.
It's clear that no one has any idea what they're talking about.
The commentating sounds like it's being given by someone who's seen two fights in his whole life, names are frequently mispronounced and the post fight interviews are mostly very dry.
At one point in the show, Royce Gracie is actually referred to as a karate fighter.
Nick Diaz Begrudgingly Does an Interview with Ariel Helwani
14 of 20There are many, many Nick Diaz interviews out there that could be on this list, but I think this one is the most awkward.
Diaz makes it known within the first thirty seconds of the interview that he doesn't want to be doing the interview.
As the the discussion moves along and Nick starts to actually answer questions, it becomes less awkward, but the early going is pretty uncomfortable.
Also, the amount of times Diaz says "you know" in this interview is ridiculous.
Coleman Shows the World His Daughter's Abs
15 of 20No video for this one, but the picture is all you need.
When the camera went to Mark Coleman at a UFC event, Mark thought it might be a good idea to show off his daughter's abs.
I'm sure that Coleman is just proud of his daughter and the great shape that she is in.
However, I think we can all agree that lifting your young daughter's shirt on national television is probably not the best idea.
Demian Maia Kisses Nate Quarry
16 of 20This is just a case of unfortunate timing.
Nate Quarry and Demian Maia hug after their fight in a mutual show of respect.
It's hard to tell, but I think what happens is Maia intends to kiss Quarry on the cheek, but just as he's foing that Quarry turns his head.
The end result is the two men kissing on the lips and Nate quickly walks away, seemingly embarrasssed.
Wanderlei Wants to Do What to Chuck Liddell?
17 of 20Poor Wanderlei Silva.
Wanderlei met Chuck Liddell in the Octagon in order to hype their upcoming fight and a slip of the tongue made a fool of him.
Silva means to say that he wants to fight Chuck, but inadvertently implies something entirely different.
In Case You Didn't Know, Heath Herring Is Not Gay
18 of 20In 2005, Heath Herring was supposed to fight Yoshihiro Nakao in K-1, but the fight never got underway.
In the opening stair down, Yoshihiro decides to plant a kiss on Herring's lips and Heath retaliates by knocking him out.
After the fight, Heath made it very clear to everyone that he is not a homosexual.
Don't Fear Me, Fear the Awkward Silence
19 of 20After winning a fight in the UFC, Paul Buentello decided to see how many fans he had in the audience by saying the first half of his catch phrase and having the audience scream the second half.
The phrase is, "Don't fear me, fear the consequences".
Paul yells, "Don't fear me", into the microphone only to have to audience respond with uncomfortable silence.
Buentello recovers pretty quickly, but it was clearly very embarrassing for him.
A Battered Mark Coleman Terrifies His Children
20 of 20Again no video, but the picture tells the story well enough.
After losing to Fedor Emelianenko in 2004, Mark Coleman decided to bring his daughters into the ting to show them that Daddy was okay.
The children, however, were horrified to see there father's face in such a swollen state and began to weep uncontrollably.
Mark seemed aloof to the terror in his daughter's faces and proceeded to introduce them to Fedor, telling them that Emelianenko was a "very nice man".
I'm sure his daughters are over it now, but it was a difficult thing to watch at the time and it left most spectators in disbelief.
