WWE: What Will Dustin Rhodes Do as the New Head of the Divas Division?

Tom ClarkJun 7, 2018

The WWE Divas division reportedly has a new boss, and his name is Goldust.

It’s odd that this little nugget hit the net the way it did on Thursday, at least from my perspective. I was very close to writing a piece on the plight of the women in WWE and how I would personally revamp the entire division from the ground up.

Yeah, one of those columns a, “This is what I would do” commentary, as if one fan’s ideas could impact anything in WWE at this point.

Then again, there’s the fact that CM Punk is getting the push of a lifetime, and Daniel Bryan is apparently on his way.

Without getting back into the whole debate of whether or not we as fans are being heard by the powers that be in the house that McMahon built, I will simply say that at least one of our more popular issues has been addressed.

Now, we’re on to the struggling Divas of World Wrestling Entertainment and what can be done to improve their current situation.

There is little argument that the female workers of this company are less relevant than the guy ringing the bell. It’s been a tragic, sad slide downhill since the days of Lita versus Trish Stratus.

In fact, those days are very hard to remember at times, considering where we are now.

Trish revitalized women’s wrestling in WWE, taking it to new heights and making it respectable again. Though she started her career as nothing more than eye candy, a typical hot blonde with nothing to offer except for sex appeal, Trish soon decided that she wanted more from the business.

She was trained, she was pushed and she responded. While as a man I always appreciated her for her good looks, as a fan I was floored by how good she became in the ring.

For me, it was no longer about what she looked like. Now it was about what she looked like in the ring.

Trish was good, she was a natural and in many ways, she opened the door for the Divas who came after her.

Molly Holly, Mickie James, Torrie Wilson, Victoria and the aforementioned Lita, all enjoyed successful runs in the company with Trish leading the way.

Women’s wrestling went from shameless half naked showboating to being more about the actual wins and losses. Trish was the perfect fit at the perfect time.

Since Trish’s heyday, the Divas have went through their ups and downs. Mickie took her place as Women’s Champion and performed admirably.

Candice Michelle, another woman who began as merely a personality meant to get a literal rise out of fans, became a very good worker. This girl was not on my radar as a fan whatsoever.

But, as with Trish before her, my opinion totally changed when I watched her get better and better every week in the ring.

At some point in these past few years, the Divas began to struggle. It’s a well known issue that all fans are aware of, and it does not seem to be getting any better.

Short matches, lazy slow paced work in the ring, lack of personalities to push, the explanations for the downfall are many, and every one bearing serious merit. At times, I have wondered how long the Divas Championship would actually be kept alive and honestly whether or not it even deserved to be.

But with this bit of breaking news on Thursday, there is cause for optimism.

For me, Dustin Rhodes is a future WWE Hall of Famer. He was very good in the ring and played to the hilt one of the most controversial gimmicks that professional wrestling has ever seen.

Without Dustin in the role, there would have been no Goldust. He not only embraced it, but he was the reason it was so successful for so long.

Surely Dustin will bring that understanding of character and veteran ability to the Divas division. I for one am anxious to see how he responds to the challenge and what will happen next.

As long as he doesn’t put on the gold wig and wrestle for the Divas Title himself. Then again, it would be a lot more entertaining than anything we’ve seen from the women in a long time.
