Paraguay vs Uruguay: 5 Reasons to Watch Copa America 2011 Final

Matt FaulconerJun 7, 2018

What to Watch for in the 2011 Copa America Final

The 2011 Copa America Final will be between Paraguay and Uruguay, two teams that were not expected to advance this far.

Argentina and Brazil were the two favorites entering this tournament, but both were eliminated in the quarterfinal round after losing in shootouts.

Casual fans may not be as familiar with these two teams as they are with the Brazilians or the Argentinians, but these two teams have a lot to offer.

Here are five things to watch for in Sunday's final:

1. Larissa Riquelme

For those who are unaware, Larissa Riquelme has promised the Daily Mail that she will pose nude on the pitch if Paraguay wins the Copa America. She made a promise previously to run naked through the streets if they had won the World Cup.

Paraguay likely picked up some extra fans with Riquelme's promise.

2. Battle of Goalkeepers

Both of the goalies have played superbly so far in the Copa America.

Paraguay goalie Justo Villar has played extremely well in the past two shootouts and survived by the luck of the post in extra time against Venezuela. He has not given up a goal in the last two matches.

On the other hand, Fernando Muslera of Uruguay put on an incredible performance against Argentina to keep his team from being knocked out, giving up just one goal in the game and prevailing in penalty kicks, and he continued that solid play against Peru.

Which goalkeeper will win this battle? It should be an interesting matchup.

3. Roque Santa Cruz

Roque Santa Cruz of Paraguay has had an injured muscle in his leg, and was unable to start the semifinal match against Venezuela. He came on as a substitute late in the match, but was subbed out just seven minutes later after realizing he was unable to go.

Paraguay fans will be hoping that he is able to go in this match, or at least be able to come on and make an impact for the team.

4. Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez

Forlan and Suarez have been on fire this tournament, and are seemingly involved in every scoring chance for Uruguay. If these two continue to connect and set up opportunities, they should be unstoppable.

However, if Paraguay can match Forlan and Suarez, they will have a legitimate shot at knocking off Uruguay.

Forlan and Suarez are both capable of becoming a one-man highlight reel at any time, so they are certainly two players to focus on.

5. Will Paraguay win the Copa America without winning a match?

Paraguay has yet to win a match in this tournament. They played to a draw in all three of the matches in the group stages and barely made it to the quarterfinals.

Since then, they have not scored a goal, knocking off Brazil and Venezuela in shootouts.

If they win another game in penalties, they will be the first team ever to win the Copa America without winning a game outright in the entire tournament.
