WWE: Why John Cena Must Turn on CeNation in the Wake of His Defeat

Michael CahillJul 18, 2011

It’s lonely at the top, and it was never more lonely than it was for John Cena in Chicago last night. While you didn’t expect that the anti-hero, CM Punk, would get booed in his own hometown, you couldn’t have expected that he would get the kind of reception he got.

To say Cena got booed would be putting it mildly. He got booed from every corner and crevice of the arena. If CeNation was present, there must have been a gag order because they were silent for one of Cena’s best performances.

And make no mistake that John Cena put on a hell of a show. For those who have their doubts about John Cena in the ring, they should be put to rest, at least temporarily as he brought the house down last night. While Punk has always been the better in ring performer, it takes two to tango in an epic match and Cena was every bit his equal. It made you gain a little respect for the Superstar.

However, the fans didn’t seem to share the same belief. As the match wore on the boos got louder and Cena seemed disillusioned by his struggles and the lack of support from CeNation. With every near win, and every failure to close it out his head hung lower. Even the Five Knuckle Shuffle, which is his go-to pop move, came at a time in the match where the boos were so loud and so prolonged that even Cena seemed uninterested in pulling it off. It was as if he knew the crowd could not be won over.

It was a Cena that we have never seen before. It should be the signal of a new era for John Cena. Remember, that this villainous reaction from the crowd comes on the heels of a Rock YouTube video where he blasted Cena for being in the WWE for the money and that his act was tired and phony.

These words caused Cena to keep that stiff upper lip, but as the week wore on, even his tweets seemed a little more curt. It was as if that tough exterior, as if Cena was down for the “hustle,” but wasn’t feeling the “loyalty” or “respect.”

The time is now, WWE, for John Cena to go heel. I know, it’s the tired plea that we hear all the time, but there are reasons to do it. The WWE has embraced CM Punk, the anti-hero and are willing to ride him out as long as the WWE doesn’t make a mistake with his character.

The hatred for Cena couldn’t be any more palpable, which means that all John Cena would need is give that hatred right back. Many times the problem with turning someone so well liked, into someone so hated, is that you have to figure out just how to turn the crowd against Cena.

Problem solved as Cena is one of the most hated men in company, by the fans, and his going heel would be the easiest transition the WWE could make. With the boos so much louder than the cheers it would make sense that at this time, right now, that Cena turn his back on the people.

The WWE Universe has made their voice heard, now it’s time that the WWE and John Cena give the people what they want.
