In 2008, we've been looking for a great championship battle. We've been expecting somebody to take over the top spot on the Cup level. With two races to go, the lead is shrinking, but is still fairly comfortable for Johnson.
The same thing could be said for the Nationwide Series championship battle where Edwards has been closing the gap, but Bowyer still holds a decent lead in the standings with the season winding down.
The third championship battle in Nascar is definitely to close to call.
Who would have thought that coming into this season that with two races to go, we'd be calling the battle for the Craftsman Truck Series championship the best and most competitive of Nascar's top three racing series.
Going into Phoenix this upcoming weekend, Johnny Benson and Ron Hornaday Jr. are separated by a mere six points. Six. That could be as little of a difference of two positions, in the final two races for either driver as to who comes away with the championship, and who leaves Homestead thinking of what might have been.
Hornaday is the defending champion, and he knows what it takes to finish a season strong down the stretch when involved in a tough championship battle. Johnny Benson wasn't in the picture late last season, but in 2006, was involved with Todd Bodine for the championship.
Bodine held Benson off and became the champion that season. These two drivers have raced so incredibly close this season, and the six point gap is truly an indication of how close these two have been to each other.
In 23 starts this season, points leader Johnny Benson has three poles, five wins, 14 top fives, and 17 top ten finishes. Hornaday has four poles, a series leading six wins, 14 top fives, and 17 top tens.
Other than one pole and one win, these drives are as even as you can be when compared to another competitor, and nothing is going to change that coming in to the final two races of the 2008 season.
Whichever man comes out on top and raises the trophy above their head after Homestead, it's safe to say that man will have earned it.
