Frankie Edgar Overrated?

Jordy McElroyJun 7, 2018

Despite securing significant wins over world class names such as B.J. Penn, Sean Sherk, Tyson Griffin and Jim Miller, UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar is having a hard time impressing some of his peers.

"Me personally, I think Frankie Edgar is overrated. He beat B.J. Penn twice. I'll give the guy credit where credit is due, but he barely got away from Gray Maynard," UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard told Pro MMA Radio.

Maynard dropped Edgar several times in the first round of their UFC 125 bout, but the champ was able to survive the early onslaught and storm back into the fight. The back and forth war ended in a draw, and the entire lightweight division has been at a standstill ever since.

Edgar has proven himself as a top player in the division against upper-echelon opposition, but Guillard feels that Edgar's rise to superstardom has more to do with promotion than actual skill.

"I feel a lot of the guys at the top of the heap were overrated. The UFC will promote them harder so they'll get more of the attention," Guillard said.

In his first bout with Penn, Edgar was a significant underdog, and there were quite a few people that questioned the UFC's decision to even give him the title shot. After Edgar defeated Penn, people finally saw him as a world class lightweight.

His ability to continuously overcome the odds has attracted a multitude of fans, but Guillard isn't hung up over quality of opposition. It all comes down to putting on good performances and finishing fights.

"He's the champ right now, but he's not a finisher. To me, a lot of guys who aren't finishing fights are overrated," Guillard said. "Nowadays, you get a lot of bad judging, so who's to say these guys really won some of these fights they say they won. I just feel overall that best 155er, and I'm content with that."

Edgar has earned nine victories inside the octagon, but he has only finished two of those bouts.

While Guillard makes some valid points about the spotty judging and finishing fights, it's hard to ignore the world class abilities of Edgar, who has faced much stiffer opposition.

Is Frankie Edgar overrated?

As Guillard said, he's the UFC champion, and that really should be enough.
