One Goalie Too Many

Caitlin SchulzContributor INovember 2, 2008

There's a problem in Edmonton.  It's not a heinous one yet, nor is it a problem other teams wouldn't love to have.

Edmonton has too many goalies.

Here's the issue.  Mathieu Garon is the number one guy.  He was last year, and will continue to be so this year unless something drastic happens.

Dwayne Roloson is a solid back-up goalie.  He's winding down his career, but can still pull out all the stops.  He comes at a pretty hefty price tag though.

Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers is the future.  Whether he's in Edmonton's future is something Steve Tambellini needs to decide.  Soon.

All three have one way contracts, meaning they will have to pass through waivers to get to the minors (the place Deslauriers should be this year).

The problem isn't even necessarily the goalies; all three are decent enough. The problem comes later in the season when the Oilers come to their usual problem.  What happens when the Oilers are plagued by their traditional set of late season injuries?

One extra goalie who has to sit in the press box is one less defenceman the Oilers can have waiting in the wings.  When Souray, Staios, or Grebeshkov go down, we'll be sorrily missing our extra "D."

Something's got to give.  One of the guys need to go, but who do you drop?

I don't have a great answer, but I have one or two suggestions:

1) Put Deslauriers in the minors.

Risk the waivers.  Because most teams are doing all right in the goalie department, chances are they won't pick him up, but the longer you wait, the more teams will find flaws in their own teams, and the more interested they might be in a young up and comer.  Give Deslauriers another year to hone his skills and then give him the back up position next year.

2) Trade Roloson or waive him.

He's getting older and his hefty salary is a big dent in our budget.  Market him to teams like Montreal who may be looking for an experienced back up to teach the younger guys.

3) Trade Garon.

If Deslauriers is in the Oilers' future, keep him, keep Roloson, and run them on an alternation.  Get rid of Garon.  Waive him, trade him, whatever works.

We need the extra roster position for defencemen and forwards.  The goalies need to stop hogging the space.  We don't need three.  Drop one.
