Roy Williams Proposal Is Better Than Proposing at a Sporting Event

Jamal WilburgJun 2, 2018

Roy Williams made headlines for mailing a $76,000 engagement ring to his girlfriend Brooke Daniels, a former Miss Texas USA. Talk about bad ways to propose and via overnight mail is right up there at the top of the list.

It was amazing how the media and fans took to the airwaves and social media and bashed Williams for his decision on how to propose. Although it may not have been the most romantic way of proposing that isn't the biggest failure in his decision making.

The first rule in any marriage proposal is simply, don't ask if you don't know what the answer will be. Guys and sports fans across the country fail at this simple rule everyday.

There are a lot of men who propose at sporting events every year. Although this may be their dream proposal and many are successful it's overall a really bad idea, especially if you haven't followed the first rule.

If you are thinking of proposing at a sporting event or in any public setting here are five examples of what not to do.

No Mascot Involvement

1 of 5

Mascots are great entertainment at ball games, but make horrible assistants in proposals. As this poor guy learned, the same mascot that escorted her to the court escorted him off the court.

Seriously, at what point in proposal brainstorming does one think, "if only the coyote could help?"

Don't Make Her Think She Is Winning Money

2 of 5

Jumping out of a mascot in a fake promotion to make her think she is winning money is neither romantic nor a good idea. Now she is upset she didn't win the money, and he goes home feeling worse than the Wizards look on the court.

Stay Away from the Jumbotron

If you are going to buy a jumbotron engagement announcement, be more creative than, "will you be my blueshirt bride?"

Stay Away from Half Court

The only thing worse than getting rejected in a marriage proposal is getting rejected at the center of 20,000 people's attention. Worse than that is having it broadcast live on television.

Certain moments are better being private so that if they don't go to plan, few people can witness the failure.

It's also never good when Tracy McGrady is laughing at you the way NBA stars laugh at his career.

Know How Your Girlfriend Reacts

When proposing in public, the last thing that you want to happen is to get slapped and have the girl walk away.
