Victor Ortiz vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.: Victor's Reasons to Succeed

Jess Matthew BeltranJun 7, 2018

Victor Ortiz posed his usual stance with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their first press conference.

Everyone thinks Ortiz is a southpaw, but actually, he is a natural right-hander. His defense is strong and he packs so much power while fighting on his left hand. Still, nobody really notices it, and most of the time, no one really cares. It has been like that for most of his career—he has been underestimated and unnoticed, even after winning his WBC welterweight title against Andre Berto. It was a controversial win, as Berto accusing him of taking performance-enhancing drugs. Victor nonetheless strived at the thought of winning.

At an early age of ten, Victor had already dealt with more in life than you could ever imagine. His mother left their family for another man and his father abandoned them five years later. He and his siblings were left to fend for themselves before going to foster care. Victor was simply bound to fail. Everyone expected him to go down and get buckled up. But for every reason he had to fail, Victor found many more reasons to succeed.

Victor always wanted a challenge. He wanted everyone to think that he could not do it; that he was too small or just a hyped-up fighter. All the while, in his heart his his fights were about his real struggles; his life. That was what made him a better fighter and a mature student of life.

This coming September 17, he will enter the biggest fight of his career against a top pound-per-pound fighter in Floyd Mayweather Jr. Of all the boxers that could match up with Mayweather, Victor is the perfect dancing rehearsal partner for Mayweather's eventual face-off with Manny Pacquiao. But will there really be a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather showdown?Ā  That remained a question and a trending topic, even at the Mayweather vs. Ortiz fight’s press conference. And once again, Victor, before his biggest fight, went unnoticed.Ā  But this is where he has thrived most: out of the limelight.

This fight is not all about Victor’s claim to money and fame. This is for all the people who believed, for all who struggled and most of all, for the life he lived.

Everybody expected Victor to fall. This is the very reason why he always succeeds.
