WWE Love Story: When Did You First Fall in Love with the Universe?
When do you know you’re in love?
Most people remember that first date, the first time grasping for the others hand and feeling the warmth and joy that comes when they grasp yours back.
Most people remember that wonderful awkward moment right before that magical first kiss, and most people definitely remember the tense uncertainty right before uttering the words “I love you.”
I remember my first chair shot…
A 12-year-old kid has just witnessed a brutal act of violence upon another man. The man lays there in a pool of his own “blood”, retching in agony as a dark sinister man hovers over him, a steel chair raised above his head, preparing to deal the final blow.
But wait, what’s this? Out of nowhere comes a savior armed only with a sock. Our hero rescues the bloodied victim by shoving the sock directly down the throat of the villain. The 12-year-old boy is stunned, shocked, scared…captivated.
The energy from the thousands of people watching as our white knight saves the day, pours from the arena through the television set, and directly into the child’s heart.
Just then our “bloodied” victim returns from the dead to deliver a vicious revenge blow using the chair that humbled him minutes earlier. He lies on top of the dark sinister man.
1…2…3… “I love you.”
The 12-year-old boy wide eyed in wonderment, confused but curious, is hooked. From this day forth every Monday and Thursday night he sits and watches as good battles evil within the confines of a 20 by 20 square foot ring.
Captivated by the men who “risk their lives” to protect the world from the evil Corporate Ministry, and their diabolical leader Vincent K. McMahon.
He watches in awe as the crowd cheers the raising of an eyebrow, the clash of two beer cans hitting each other, and the weekly rise of a “dead man” from his grave.
Is it real? …
As this child’s favorite character would answer “It doesn't matter if it’s real or not!”
The boy grows older, whether he wants to or not, but the feeling he receives from watching these larger than life modern day gladiators never grows old. He will always remember the first time he saw the white knight save the day.
The man will always remember the first time he convinced his father to take him to his first live event. He will always remember the electricity that flowed through his veins each and every Monday and Thursday night as a child.
I have become this man, and I will definitely always remember the time when I fell in love with the WWE.
So, when did you know you were in love?
