UFC News: Frankie Edgar Ready to Go for October, Gray Maynard Still Not Cleared

Andrew BarrJul 6, 2011

UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and No.1 lightweight contender Gray Maynard were slated to fight at UFC 130 in May, but both fighters were forced to withdraw from the bout, due to injury.

As it sits, it appears that Frankie Edgar's road to recovery has been shorter than Gray's.

Frankie's manager Ali Abdel-Aziz told MMAjunkie.com that Edgar has been cleared to fight and can be ready to go as early as October.

Gray, however, has not yet been cleared to compete.

"Right now, we're still waiting for him to be cleared by the doctor," said Gil Martinez, Maynard's boxing coach. "Hopefully, it happens this week."

Maynard had to go undergo arthroscopic surgery on his this past May, due to an injury suffered during training.

Edgar withdrew from the fight due to a back injury that had been plaguing him for quite some time.

Gray's management seems confident that he will be cleared soon to start training and that from there everything will come together.

"Once we get him back into the gym and we know everything is good, then we will move forward and start looking for the date," Martinez said.

Gray and Frankie have fought twice before. At UFC 125, they fought to a split draw, which is the reason for the third match up being scheduled. Maynard came close to finishing the fight in the first round, badly hurting Edgar with a left hand and following up with vicious flurries of punches while Edgar tried to recover. Frankie managed to rally back in the following rounds and did enough to earn the draw.

The first time the two fought was in 2008. Maynard won the fight by unanimous decision.
