WWE, John Cena: A Face Change by Cena Would Be Good for Wrestling

David LevinJun 4, 2018

We are in need of change. Even wrestlers need change. Keeping the same shtick is old and stale, and we, the fans, get tired of the same old thing day after day.

Even the best wrestlers in the world, like The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair, have gone through various changes in their personas and characters.

John Cena is no different. He came into the WWE as a thug and heel and is now one of the most recognized faces in the company. But even his act looks goofy at times and is not the best look in the promotion.

With the changes taking shape in the company (the desire for Vince McMahon to move toward the entertainment side of the brand while not focusing so much on the wrestling aspect), there needs to be a shake up—and not just the one by CM Punk.

McMahon is trying to make wrestling (or his company) more mainstream. And to do so, wrestlers must change and make themselves more adaptable.

Here are a few reasons why a face change would be good for WWE, John Cena and the WWE Universe.

Marketing

1 of 7

From the Dr. of Thuganomics to his "The Champ is Here" character now, there are a great many ways to market a new look.

From posters to shirts to merchandise, Cena has the look and the name to move product. It is what the WWE counts on at live shows and through its on-line marketing.

A Chance To Try Something New

2 of 7

Cena has shown that he can play the part of the heel and face, and do them both well. But his "face" is a little too vanilla. He reminds me a bit of Bob Backlund in his approach.

A new character opens new doors and makes him more evolutionary. He now shows that he is a little disheartened with his look. Over the last few weeks he has also seemed to be out of touch with his current position.

New Rivalries

Cena making changes means others making changes. If he turns heel, we could see him face John Morrison.

It also opens the door for him to join forces with an R-Truth, Miz, or a Wade Barrett—if that would be developed.

There is so much there to work with.

Other Wrestlers Will Step Up

While face changes are important to the story lines in wrestling, they mean others will get a push or step up and take their place among the best.

We are seeing this with Alex Riley. We are seeing this with R-Truth.

Cena's movement is like a stock market and definitely affects others.

Fans Love To Hate a Former Face

5 of 7

This works in both directions.

Cena is so popular that he could be cheered as a hero, even with the change.

This is also good for marketing, television and wrestling in general.

Ric Flair is loved and hated. Randy Orton is loved and hated. Harley Race was loved and hated.

Notice the trend?

Misery Loves Company

I would love to see Cena turn his back on the people like Hulk Hogan or the NWO turned on the fans and their own kind.

Wrestling leaves the door open for so many things to happen. We can see and hope for change, praying for Cena to basically spit on the brand that made him popular.

This is not a Stone Cold tactic, rather it's a move to help the fans get their fair share of a product that they are plunking down money to see on a nightly basis.

Let me know how you think a Cena face change would affect the WWE Universe.
