2011 College Baseball Home Run Derby: Contestants, Results and More
College of Charleston freshman Daniel Aldrich won the 2011 College Baseball Home Run Derby, which took place at TD Ameritrade Park.
Aldrich competed against Georgia Southern's Victor Roacheโthe NCAA's leader in home runs for the 2011 seasonโin the finals and defeated him by a score of 4-2.
Aldrich adds another award to his collection as he previously won National Freshman of the Year honors from the Baseball Writers of America after hitting 22 home runs with 73 RBI and batting .347 for the season.
He continued dominating on Saturday night as he led all the competitors with 10 home runs through two rounds, but needed back-to-back home runs on his last attempt, which proved to be just enough to get him past Roache.
Arizona State's Joey DeMichele and Bucknell's Doug Shribman were both shut out and failed to hit a single home run out of the park. ย
The only player at the competition that competed at the College World Series was Vanderbilt's Connor Harrell, and he failed to make much of an impact as he was only able to hit one home run.
One interesting note from the derby is that players were allowed to use their old aluminum bats that they were no longer able to use this past season. ย
Aldrich and Roache also took pitches from their fathers in the competition.
Other players that competed in the competition included Virginia Tech sophomoreย Andrew Rash,ย Doug Shribman from Bucknell,ย Dylan Pratt from East Tennessee State, andย Richie Shaffer from Clemson.
