UFC 132 Results: Ranking the Top 10 Welterweights in the UFC

Andrew BarrJun 7, 2018

UFC 132 has just passed us by and Carlos Condit took a big leap up the welterweight ladder by handing Dong Hyun Kim his first ever MMA loss.

This is a huge win for Condit, who defeated his opponent with a brutal flying knee, and it definitely puts him into title contention.

So, with Condit making his move up the ranks, let's take a look at the top 10 welterweight in the UFC.

Nick Diaz is not on this list because he has not yet competed in the UFC's welterweight division since the organization re-signed him.

No. 10: Rick Story

1 of 10

UFC Record: 6-2

Notable victories against: Thiago Alves, Johny Hendricks

2011 has been a crazy year for Rick Story.

In May, Story fought the most significant fight of his career against Thiago Alves.

Thiago was considered to be a top-five fighter in the division and was on his way to earning another title shot.

Rick stopped Thiago's momentum, defeating him by unanimous decision.

After that victory, Story was considered to be in title contention and the UFC offered him a huge opportunity in the form of a fight with Nate Marquardt.

The fight was in less than a month, but a big name like Nate Marquardt wasn't something Story wanted to turn down.

He took the fight, but Nate dropped out at the last minute and Rick instead faced Charlie Brenneman.

Rick lost the fight, but I believe it was due to over-training and not having enough time to develop a proper game plan.

No. 9: Anthony Johnson

2 of 10

UFC Record: 6-3

Notable victories against: Dan Hardy, Luigi Fioravanti

Anthony Johnson is one of the most intimidating men in the welterweight division.

He is incredibly explosive, has big power in his hands and a solid wrestling base.

The biggest fight of Johnson's career was against Josh Koscheck and, while the fight was competitive in the early going, Anthony was submitted in the second round. Many fans have expressed an interest in seeing these two fight again.

After a long lay off, Johnson rebounded from the loss by defeating former title contender, Dan Hardy.

No. 8: Diego Sanchez

3 of 10

UFC Record: 12-4

Notable victories against: Martin Kampmann, Paulo Thiago, Clay Guida, Nick Diaz

Diego Sanchez had a rough return to the welterweight division in 2010, when he dropped a unanimous decision victory to John Hathaway.

Since then, Sanchez has rebounded nicely, defeating both Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann.

Diego will look to continue his win streak later this year when he takes on welterweight legend Matt Hughes.

No. 7: Jake Ellenberger

4 of 10

UFC Record: 4-1

Notable victories against: Mike Pyle, John Howard

Jake Ellenberger had a rough entrance to the UFC. His first opponent was Carlos Condit and he lost to Carlos by split decision.

Since then, Ellenberger has been one to tear through the division.

Jake is riding a four-fight win streak, with three of those fights coming by way of knockout.

The UFC granted Ellenberger a big step up in competition for his next fight—he'll be facing off against Jake Shields later this year.

No. 6: Jake Shields

5 of 10

UFC Record: 1-1

Notable victories against: Carlos Condit, Jason Miller, Dan Henderson, Robbie Lawlor, Martin Kampmann

Some might be surprised to see Jake Shields this far down the list, but I think it's just.

Shields only has one win in the UFC and it was a lackluster split decision victory over Martin Kampmann.

In his next fight, Jake fought St-Pierre for the welterweight belt and lost decisively.

Jake did come the closest anyone has come to in a while to beating GSP, but it was only because he injured the champ with an eye poke.

Before the injury, Shields was getting owned.

No. 5: Carlos Condit

6 of 10

UFC Record: 4-1

Notable victories over: Dong Hyun Kim, Dan Hardy, Jake Ellenberger, Rory Macdonald

Carlos Condit made big waves in the welterweight division at UFC 132, defeating Dong Hyun Kim in the first round.

The victory over Kim puts Condit on a four-fight win streak, with all of those wins coming over stiff competition.

Carlos is no more than one fight away from a title shot.

No. 4: Josh Koscheck

7 of 10

UFC Record: 13-5

Notable victories over: Anthony Johnson, Paul Daley, Chris Lytle, Frank Trigg, Diego Sanchez

Josh Koscheck has been a force in the UFC's welterweight division for years.

He is one of the best wrestlers ever to compete in MMA and his stand up game has improved in leaps and bounds over the past couple years.

Koscheck finally earned himself a shot at the welterweight belt in 2010, but came up short.

He's been out for a while due to an eye injury, but expect him to return soon, looking to get back into title contendership.

No. 3: B.J. Penn

8 of 10

UFC Record: 11-6-2

Notable victories against: Matt Hughes, Jens Pulver, Sean Sherk, Diego Sanchez

B.J. Penn returned to the welterweight division in 2010 and has since gone 1-0-1.

It seems like he hasn't done enough to earn this spot yet, but I'm giving it to him based on his fight with Jon Fitch.

Jon Fitch has been considered for a long time as the second best welterweight in the world and B.J. stepped into the Octagon with him and they fought to a draw.

Penn fared better against Fitch than anyone ever has in the UFC, with the exception of Georges St-Pierre.

No. 2: Jon Fitch

9 of 10

UFC Record: 13-1-1

Notable victories against: Thiago Alves (twice), Diego Sanchez, Paulo Thiago

No surprises here.

Fitch has been considered the second best welterweight in the world for years now.

His ability to produce the same result in every fight, regardless of who his opponent is, is astounding.

Some fans may not like watching his fights, but there is no denying that Fitch is a hell of a fighter and one of the most dominant forces in MMA history.

No. 1: Georges St-Pierre

10 of 10

UFC Record: 17-2

Notable victories over: Matt Hughes (twice), BJ Penn (twice), Matt Serra, Jon Fitch, Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk, Thiago Alves, Josh Koscheck, Jake Shields

This one is just academic.

Georges St-Pierre is arguably the most dominant welterweight champion of all time.

He has lost just twice in his MMA career and has avenged both losses.

GSP is the current welterweight champion and has defended his belt six times, so far.

His next title defense will be against Nick Diaz at UFC 137.
