Forrest Griffin, Rampage Jackson and MMA's Funniest Fighters (with Video)

Andrew BarrJul 1, 2011

A sense of humor isn't mandatory to be a mixed martial artist, but it sure doesn't hurt.

Fans tend to like fighters with a good sense of humor, and fighters who the fans like are more likely to keep their jobs.

After all, the UFC and other MMA organizations are all businesses, and fighters who can give good interviews and crack jokes help sell fights.

Let's take a look at MMA's funniest fighters...

Note: Humor is subjective and therefore the fighters on this list are not ranked in any particular order.

Bob Sapp

1 of 20

Bob Sapp is an animal inside the cage, but outside of it, he's nothing but a giant teddy bear.

Sapp is going to have a hard time intimidating his opponents with this commercial lurking on the Internet.

It's hard to frightened by someone after you've seen them shimmy like that.

Wallid Ismail

2 of 20

Wallid Ismail falls under the category of "accidentally funny;" he doesn't know he's being funny, but he definitely is.

His charmingly weak grasp of the English language is what does most of the work, I think.

I mean, it's hard not to laugh when his pronounces chicken "cheeken."

The points when his eyes go all wide and crazy make me laugh, too.

This is guy who's funny, not because he cracks jokes, but because he's a character.

Also, what's up with the room he's being interviewed in? It's looks like he's at a disco dance party inside of a cow.

Matt Serra

3 of 20

Like Matt Serra or hate him, the guy is a really gifted trash talker.

Pointing out that Frank Trigg has a lower back tattoo and referring to it as a "tramp stamp" is just beautiful trash talk. There's no real comeback for that.

I've heard that he also does a really funny impression of Matt Hughes, but haven't been able to find it.

Serra loses a few points for having kind of an obnoxious voice. Makes it hard to listen to him for too long.

Gerald Harris

4 of 20

Gerald Harris loves to "troll" other MMA fighters.

There's a couple of these prank call videos you can find on YouTube and they're all pretty funny. He puts some pretty good character work into them.

Check out some of his interviews, too. He's not always cracking jokes, but he's a really personable guy and he has great charisma.

Genki Sudo

5 of 20

Some people might say that Genki Sudo's entrances are indulgent.

Those people are absolutely right, but that doesn't mean they're not still a whole lot of fun to watch.

His entrances aren't really funny for any technical reason I can think of. They're just so over-the-top ridiculous that you can't help but laugh.

Nick Diaz

6 of 20

Nick Diaz, like Wallid Ismail, falls into the category of unintentionally funny.

If you like Michael Cera movies, then you'll probably find this guy funny; Diaz' interviews are always sort of awkwardly hilarious.

I think he would make a great character in a movie.

Idea for a drinking game: Take a drink every time Nick Diaz says "Y'know?"

Pat Barry

7 of 20

Pat Barry is "I'd love to hit a bar with this guy and have a few laughs" funny.

He's conversationally humorous, but not at all mean.

He just comes off as playful and fun to be around and seems like a good guy.

"My hand is not ever gonna be what it was beforehand."

Do you guys think that pun was intentional?

Josh Barnett

8 of 20

Josh Barnett might give the best interviews out of any mixed martial artist ever.

When being interviewed, he is always very calm, answers questions quickly and thoroughly and does so with a good range of vocabulary.

It's rare that you'll find an interview where you'll be laughing consistently throughout, but there's always a couple good wisecracks in there.

Wes Sims

9 of 20

Wes Sims is one part funny, two parts crazy, but it's enough to get him on the list.

Wes is always good for an energetic and entertaining interview.

Sometimes he comes off as trying a bit too hard to be funny, but I'd rather have that than someone who is completely boring.

Amir Sadollah

10 of 20

Amir Sadollah is like Josh Barnett, in the sense that tends to give a very good interview and there's usually a few good jokes thrown in there.

Some fans feel that he comes off as cocky, but I don't really see it, especially given that he is typically very respectful when regarding his opponents.

Jorge Rivera

11 of 20

Most people didn't know about Jorge Rivera's sense of humor until the build up to his fight with Michael Bisping.

While perhaps a bit immature, the video Rivera posted online is actually very funny.

Not only does it do a good job of mocking Michael Bisping, but it's also a solid parody of fight promos in general, as evidenced by the spray bottle bit at the beginning.

The video does show a certain lack of professionalism, but it made me laugh hard enough that I don't care.

Matt Mitrione

12 of 20

This video is the aftermath of some hilarious comments Matt Mitrione made about Tito Ortiz' wife.

Now, I'm not one to condone going after a man's wife or family. Stuff like that is a bit over the line.

However, if you are going to do it, you should at least make it funny. To Mitrione's credit, that's just what he did.

“I think it’s awesome…AWESOME that the UFC is finally doing this. I think that it’s a great promotion thatthey’re finally letting women fight for their man’s honor. I think that’s a great thing. We all know that Tito’sgonna give some type of excuse and back out, so Jenna’s gonna have to step in and fight Bader for Tito’shonor,” Mitrione deadpanned. “Bader, be really careful because it’s a trap fight. We all know that she’sawesome off her back and she’s got phenomenal top control, but remember that she doesn’t choke easily.”

Tom Lawlor

13 of 20

Warning: The video for this slide contains poop.

For starters, you have to be a pretty funny guy to be willing to have an interview done while also having a tube stuck up your butt.

Lawlor is a very funny, laid back guy. This video cracks me up because most people would be embarrassed to be interviewed while their excrement is being sucked out of them through a tube, but Tom actually calls attention to it.

Dan Hardy

14 of 20

Dan Hardy is disliked by a lot of fans because they believe that he's cocky.

I can't disagree necessarily, but you have to give the guy the credit he deserves; he can be very funny.

Hardy has a few good lines in this video, particularly in reference to Josh Koscheck.

Also, before Dan fought GSP, he talked about St-Pierre entering the Octagon in a karate gi and referred to the gi as pajamas. That's pretty funny.

Quinton Jackson

15 of 20

And you thought Bob Sapp could dance!

Quinton Jackson is one of the most playful fighters in the UFC.

He's known for his sense of humor, his hilarious facial expressions and his unfortunate tendency to dry hump reporters.

Mirko Cro Cop

16 of 20

Who would have guessed it?

A lot of people (including myself before I found this video) had no idea that Cro Cop had any sense of humor whatsoever.

As it turns out, he definitely does have a sense of humor and an affinity for pranks... if throwing cups of water at people still qualifies as a prank.

Jason Miller

17 of 20

Jason Miller just oozes charisma.

The dude's naturally funny and super entertaining. It's rare that a fighter can really hold your attention for a whole seven minute interview, but he pulls it off like nothing and throws in some killer jokes while he's at it.

Miller also hosts a show on MTV called Bully Beatdown. If you haven't seen the show, I'd recommend checking it out. It's a little corny and over the top at times, but still enjoyable to watch.

Chael Sonnen

18 of 20

Chael Sonnen is the most gifted trash talker in the history of MMA.

It's hard to tell if Chael is crazy, or a secret genius.

Sometimes I actually believe that after he says the crazy things that he does, he goes home and laughs about it.

Crazy or genius. it doesn't really matter. The stuff that comes out of this guys mouth is hilarious, really clever most of the time and he delivers it well.

I would love to see Chael Sonnen on a Comedy Central Roast.

Forrest Griffin

19 of 20

Forrest Griffin is one of the most beloved fighters in UFC history.

Like many of the fighters on this list Forrest is witty and can crack a good jokes, but what's most likeable about him is that he won't hesitate to poke fun at himself.

You can listen to an interview with Forrest Griffin where he talks about his fight with Anderson Silva here.

I laughed harder at that interview than I've ever laughed at anything MMA related.

Bas Rutten

20 of 20

Oh, man.

Just watch the video.

Bas Rutten is a crazy, awesome and hilarious man.

Also, check this video out. I can't really give Bas the credit for it, but it's still really funny.
