WWE: Will WWE Lose Money Using CM Punk Angle to Sell "B" Show?

Adam WellsJul 1, 2011

CM Punk’s promo has created a buzz around wrestling that hasn’t been seen in years. There may be more interest in the Money In the Bank show than there was before the promo, but would WWE have been better off saving it for a bigger show, like Royal Rumble, WrestleMania or Summerslam?

"

… Casual Fans have become conditioned in recent years to order the big three or so shows, so the amount of added business you could spike for Money in the Bank would not take full advantage of what would hoped to be the potential for the angle. For SummerSlam, this would make the company a lot more money and I’m kind of surprised with a dynamic angle like this they didn’t save it for that show.

While I think there is some validity to that, I think that it will work out better for WWE by using this angle to promote a “B show.”

This Money In the Bank event probably added another 10,000 buys at least thanks to the strength of Punk’s promo. If the story is handled well on that show, the buzz will still be there and SummerSlam will still generate more interest than it would have otherwise.

The question is whether or not WWE can sustain this momentum, something that this company has had problems with in recent years.

For instance, last year WWE was riding high with the Nexus angle. If you recall when that faction made its debut on Raw, the Internet exploded because it looked like new guys were actually going to get pushed into the main event mix for the first time in years.

And even though the group did get to headline SummerSlam, by the time the group actually got to the main event it had been buried on television week after week. Combine that with the fact that John Cena and team WWE beat Nexus clean, and the angle was dead even before it got started.

Nexus has never been the same since, even with CM Punk leading the Raw faction. Everyone in the group not name CM Punk has been made to look like a jobber and WWE doesn't seem to be doing much to help them actually improve in the ring.

While it’s prudent to ask whether or not WWE would have been better off using this angle with CM Punk to sell a bigger show, the bigger question is how well WWE will handle the angle from here on out.

If everything is built up right, SummerSlam will have plenty of momentum and a lot of people will buy it. If things are not planned well, which has been the case for a lot of WWE angles in recent years, SummerSlam’s buy-rate will suffer.
