Arsenal Transfer News: Dark Days Cloud Dismal Summer for Gunners

Gabe ZaldivarJul 1, 2011

Arsenal, a top-flight cub is in danger of again missing out on any trophy for the seventh straight year. It will be due to a summer transfer window that saw more bad news flood in the door than good.

There is a dark cloud covering Emirates Stadium, and it is threatening to stay for the entirety of the summer. It has been six long years since Arsenal won the FA Cup.

Since 2005, they have been content to watch Chelsea and Manchester United finish one and two on top of the Premiership table, a table that Arsenal is in danger of sliding down.

There is a simple fact in world football that is both annoying and necessary. The big clubs spend wildly during the summer transfer window. Rarely do you see the pocketbooks tighten while free-floating talent gets bandied about.

For the last couple of weeks, a team that has tried to crack the pinnacle of the sport has done a lot more losing than they would like.

Arsene Wenger enters the summer in the worst way imaginable. He is trying to keep his team from falling apart, rather than trying to strengthen it.

The first major piece to abandon ship is Gael Clichy. The spry defender was a pivotal part of the Gunners back line. His speed and pace will surely be missed when the bigger clubs come to town next season.

Clamoring to shore up the loss to Manchester City, Wenger has devoted his time to picking off talent from lesser side, Newcastle United. Jose Enrique and Joey Barton are in the club's sights, yet, there is no certainty that either will leave their current club.

It is a sign of the times that this top-flight club can't even guarantee a replacement for their stout defender, Clichy.

This loss will pale in comparison to what the next few days might bring. There are rumblings that Manchester City are not yet done ridding the Arsenal cupboard of all their fine talent.

Samir Nasri may yet be on the move to a side that is on the rise in City. This is counter to the momentum that is plaguing Arsenal at the moment. They are falling fast.

Nasri had a breakthrough season last year where he saw his form improve locking down the midfield for the Gunners.

He may soon be property of City, a club that is doing a lot more free spending than Arsenal at the moment.

All of this is small potatoes to losing out on Cesc Fabregas. The skipper has long been a target of his boyhood club, Barcelona. Arsenal never had a chance of keeping him, but it hurts worse amidst the tumultuous summer Wenger and company are having at the moment.

The lone signing has come in the form of Lille striker Gervinho who has welcomed the chance at coming to the noted club.

There is no certainty that Gervinho will figure as the featured striker in arsenals starting 11, but fans will take what they are given at the moment.

There is hope on the horizon. There are some rumours that United's John O'Shea is being targeted at the moment.

He could certainly step in for the loss of some of the pilfered talent. Yet, this summer has become mired in much more loss than it has been lifted by hope.

If Arsenal is looking to take the next step in their pursuit of the top spot on the table, they are not showing it at the moment.

Fans are left to wonder if these clouds will ever be lifted by a choice signing at all. For now, the Gunners stay quiet, Wenger content to wait it all out.

That is exactly what is not needed. Arsenal needs to fire away like the rest of the big boys.
