WWE: Helping Vince McMahon Address the Issues in the WWE
Dear Vinnie Mac:
I know the past week has been a little crazy in the WWE and you have been working with your writers in recent weeks to improve your broadcasts of RAW and Smackdown with the hope of bringing back some of that swagger your brand had months ago.
Maybe the best thing that happened to you last week was the bomb that was set off by CM Punk and his articulation of how he felt going into the Money in the Bank Match.
And if he was “real” in his comments about his position and the state of the locker room, etc. I wonder how it felt to be exposed like that on national television. Of course, other brands have gone through drama like that with dissatisfaction and politics the likes that would have Frank Gotch turning over in his grave.
Maybe your writing team needs a boost, maybe it got one last week from Punk or maybe you guys finally put it together after you realized that Impact has been better the past month and has been beating you to the punch with fans and their need for better wrestling and new rivalries.
So, in an effort to get you back to where you need to be, and yes, I know WWE will not be challenged on branding, marketing or dollars at the gate, I have come up with some ideas to help you and your writers get that edge back.
Look Toward the Past to Get to the Future
1 of 10Your "Attitude Era: got you where you are today. Fighting with WCW and them buying the brand taught you that fans want to see some edge to your show and while you have wrestlers who have come and gone, that brand is still popular.
While Stone Cold Steve Austin is no longer wrestling, you can continue to use him in a role similar to what he was when he challenged your authority.
The idea of using him on Tough Enough was great. Use him in other capacities.
Do Something with Wrestlemania XXVIII
2 of 10You overstepped when you had John Cena and The Rock declare their match so far in advance.
This is going to backfire.
Both men cannot build a match like this for nine or 10 months. And Cena is facing wrestlers like R-Truth and The Miz who may be better workers right now than "The Champ."
Find a way to make this relevant again.
Make Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler a Team Again
3 of 10There is nothing better than seeing JR and The King together in the broadcast chairs.
Both are the best at playing off each other. They are a symphony and fans miss this a great deal.
Michael Cole is good, but the connection between him and Lawler is weak and the use of Booker T at times makes me think the writers are reaching way too far on this one.
Take Advantage of What You Have
4 of 10Your locker room is full of wrestlers. Use them.
While you are using Cena and Christian and R-Truth and Randy Orton, look for more ways to come up with rivalries. Include face vs. face and more tournaments.
Let the wrestlers do what they do best.
Find a Medium Between Veterans and the Youth on Your Roster
5 of 10Right now, the veterans are challenging for the titles. Let the younger stars have a shot.
While Dolph Ziggler holds the U.S. Title and Ezekiel Jackson has the Intercontinental belt, Randy Orton and John Cena are veterans. So are Christian and R-Truth.
Give younger stars a chance to shine. The Miz is an example. What about Daniel Bryan, Drew McIntyre or even Wade Barrett?
More faces challenging means more fan excitement.
Increase Tag Team Exposure
6 of 10There are only a handful of tag teams that are worth a damn in your company. Add more.
Tag teams used to be part of your appeal in the past and while the Corre and Nexus are not formidable right now, you can increase your fan base with going back to the basics of wrestling.
The Hart Foundation and Mr. Fuji would be so proud.
Make Your Divas Wrestle
7 of 10If you have not noticed, the Knockouts on Impact actually wrestle like men. They are sexy and do what they are hired to do, but they also wrestle.
I am not sure that is what your divas do on your brand.
Train them. Make them more intimidating. Gail Kim is an outstanding wrestler and Beth Phoenix could play a Chyna-like role.
Make it happen.
Get Chris Jericho Back
8 of 10I know he said this week he does not want to return anytime soon.
Get him back. Have him feud with John Morrison or The Miz.
His intensity level was infectious and will help the younger superstars.
Stick to Wrestling
9 of 10Pedro Morales, Randy Savage, Bruno Sammartino, Gorilla Monsoon and the list goes on and on.
They wrestled for your brand and while you want to get away from it, wrestling made you millions.
Don't take that away from the fans and the legacy.
Keep CM Punk
10 of 10He is as close to an anti-hero you have. The closest thing to a Stone Cold on your roster. Put him in a story with John Morrison, or Sheamus or Kane.
Just keep him in the company. He is your best worker and is better than Cena or Christian or Orton.
He can be the most technically sound player on your roster and right now, you need him.
