Dallas Cowboys Must Draft A Backup QB

It’s no secret that the Dallas Cowboys have issues with Tony Romo’s backups. Brad Johnson and Brooks Bollinger are no good. If Jerry Jones knows what he’s doing (I still have faith in Jerry), he should think about finding a decent backup. We have the picks to do it, too (one in the 2nd, one in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth, two in the seventh). 

This article from Fox Sports lists their top ten senior quarterbacks for the 2009 draft. One quarterback that caught my eye was Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell, who is being projected to go in the fourth round. I think Harrell could even push Tony Romo for the starting spot. The one thing that caught my eye with Harrell especially was when whoever the author is wrote that Harrell is ”extremely accurate on intermediate routes and has nice touch on vertical routes.” 

That sounds like a quarterback that would work very well with the Cowboys receivers (Terrell Owens on both intermediate routes and vertical routes, Roy Williams on deep routes and Jason Witten on intermediate routes). The thing that I like most about Harrell is how quickly he finds the open receiver. None of the Dallas quarterbacks set themselves apart as being guys that get rid of the ball quickly. This article projects Harrell going in the fourth round at some point. The article also says that Clemson’s Cullen Harper is the top quarterback prospect, so I don’t know how much I can trust it. But with all those picks, we should be able to make a move for him in the second or third round and be able to move back up into the second or third round with all our picks in later rounds. Some might say that spending that high a pick on a backup wouldn’t be worth it, but these last two games have convinced me that a competent backup is worth his weight in gold.
