The Super Bowl: A Super Dud

Joe WillettJan 23, 2008

Year in and year out, we have a huge two week buildup to the Super Bowl.

And it seems that unless Adam Vinatieri is involved, lately, it is a game that doesn't live up to the expectations aside from a few trick plays.

Why do we always put so much emphasis on a game that ends up no more exciting than any normal game?

Since both teams turn up the intensity, there may be a few more big hits or incredible catches, but the norm seems to be safe passing and a good running game that wins these events.

Last season the Bears rolled over and let the Colts have a Super Bowl after Devin Hester started to make me think that this game would live up to the hype. One team decided to play, another decided to watch.

The year before that, the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl. Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren tried to add controversy by criticizing the officials, but it was only a decent game.

In fact, no Super Bowl game has gone to overtime. Of the 42 games among the two teams that are supposed to be the best, not a single game needed a little extra time to decide the best.

This season the Super Bowl will be surrounded by history as the Patriots go out and try to become the second team to finish a season undefeated through the Super Bowl, and the first to win 19 games in a season.

But the game looks like it will be a lopsided affair where there is no drama surrounding the finish. It will be decided early, and, like most of the recent Super Bowls, will have a select few good plays that will be remembered for the next 3 seasons, but not after that.

I believe that it isn't the games that are bad, but the insane amount of hype that goes into them. In any regular week, these games would be considered key match-ups and the result would probably be among the top 5 games that week.

But they wouldn't be remembered for the great play.  They would be reported, and then the media would move on.

If less hype is thrown into the game, maybe more people would be pleased with the end result.

But for now we will just have to live with the disappointment.
