There is no quit in the Tampa Bay Rays and there is no quit in Philly.
When the Phillies took a 4-1 lead in Game Three you could tell that their fans were getting ready to celebrate. But in the top of the seventh, the Rays did what the Rays do. A lot of hustle, a little luck, and in the blink of an eye it was a one-run game.
Note: Okay, FOX, we got it, bad call at first. But you might have wanted to say a word or two about how the ump’s view was blocked and he couldn’t see the barehanded catch by Howard.
Nothing doing for the Phillies in the bottom of the seventh. At the top of the eighth the leadoff hitter gets an infield hit. I love baseball and I love the way the Rays play the game.
Upton steals second. Upton steals third and comes home on the bad throw. Tie ballgame. And the Rays have more stolen bases in postseason play than any other team in MLB history!
I'm not sure how many baseball fans are paying attention to the 2008 World Series nationwide, but those who are missing this series are really missing something.
These teams have solid bullpens, outstanding defense, and both know how to manufacture runs when they have to.
In the bottom of the eighth it looked like the Phillies had a chance. Werth draws a leadoff walk and steals second. But then he gets picked off of second, J. P. Howell chalks up two strikeouts, and the Phillies are done.
The Rays go three up and three down in the ninth, then take the field and hand the game to the Phillies. The leadoff batter gets hit by the pitch, then Balfour throws a wild pitch while the runner is going and Navarro throws to second, er uh, make that center field, and the Phillies have a man on third and nobody out.
But let's skip the remaining details. The rest was just the hopes of a Rays comeback swirling down the drain.
Some time around 2:00 AM the Phillies took a 2-1 series lead over the Rays. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for tomorrow night…oh wait, I mean later today—Game Four starts in 18 hours!
The Rays have to find a way to get this series back to the Trop. If they can win just one in Philly they can call it good and head back home to try and finish the season with another sweep at home.
For the Phillies, their best shot at being 2008 World Champions is to finish it in Philly.
