In the NBA, offensive and defensive efficiency ratings are some of the best advanced metric stats to use when comparing teams or players. The NFL has nothing like it. But me being the NFL guru and numbers cruncher that I am, decided to create an NFL equivalent.
First off, let’s start off with the definition of offensive rating and defensive rating.
ORtg
Offensive Rating (available since the 1977-78 season in the NBA): For players, it is points produced per 100 possessions, while for teams, it is points scored per 100 possessions.
This rating was developed by Dean Oliver, author of Basketball on Paper. I will point you to Dean's book for complete details.
DRtg
Defensive Rating (available since the 1977-78 season in the NBA): For players and teams, it is points allowed per 100 possessions. This was also developed by Dean Oliver

For right now, we’re only going to do the team’s ORtg, DRtg and the Net Rtg. Remember, this is just point per 100 possessions (or drives in football’s case) scored or allowed. Here we go.
