WWE PPV: Were Brand-Exclusive Pay-Per-Views Better Than Dual Branded?

Roger T. Jun 5, 2011

Pay-per-views are one of the biggest money makers for their companies. UFC, boxing, occasionally sports and of course, WWE. WWE is a company that has a pay-per-view every month. Sometimes, more than once in a month.

When we make our decision if we want to purchase the pay-per-view or not, we look at the deciding factors. We look at the match card, storylines and the wrestlers participating in the show.

After the alliance storyline ended in late 2001, the company found itself overcrowded with talent. That is when the company created brands. The brands were created into the weekly television programs, Raw and SmackDown.

After WrestleMania X8, WWE had both of their brands compete at every pay-per-view event. It wasn't until late 2002 when WWE started labeling with brands representing the event. WWE Bad Blood was the first exclusive pay-per-view, presented by Raw.

WWE continued to have their big four events, Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, Summerslam and Survivor Series, dual branded. WWE No Way Out in 2007 was the final brand-exclusive pay-per-view.

After WrestleMania 23, I was expecting another Backlash presented by Raw. I tuned into SmackDown and they announced their main event for Backlash. Did I hear this correctly? SmackDown was being presented at Backlash.

After that, I expected another Judgment Day presented by SmackDown. Guess what? Raw and ECW also represented Judgment Day. I knew from that point on, all the pay-per-views were dual branded.

When each pay-per-view was brand exclusive, WWE could use all their talent on one event. With a month in between each brand-exclusive pay-per-view, WWE could have built up more storylines.

It could have gave more attention to the wrestlers. I think WWE made this change since the wrestlers could affect the pay-per-view buys. How many people would buy a pay-per-view each month to see John Cena in the main event? A lot I'll tell you what.

Do you think WWE should have continued to use brand-exclusive events? Do you think WWE made the right choice to have all the events dual branded? What about the current pay-per-view format. Do you think the gimmick pay-per-views could have ruined brand-exclusive events? Do you think the brand-exclusive pay-per-views could have prevented gimmick pay-per-views?
