According to an MMA weekly report, Jon Fitch is not interested in fighting Rick Story ,even though the up-and-coming welterweight called Fitch out following Story's win over Thiago Alves this past Saturday.
Fitch explained that Story has not earned a spot across the Octagon from him.
“I’m at a point in my career where I need to be fighting main events and main event fighters, and if you don’t have a belt, currently, or you haven’t owned a belt in the UFC, I’m not really interested.”
Fitch stated that a conversation with former UFC light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans is what opened his eyes to this fact.
“I’ve gone out of my way throughout my career to just fight everybody they put in front of me and it’s cost me dearly. When you fight somebody who no one knows and don’t recognize their name, it doesn’t matter how bad you beat them."
Fitch also stated that there are only two opponents in the UFC that interest him, Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn, and he is willing to wait.
“Those are the only two guys I care (to fight) or have any interest in right now. If I (have to) sit out a year and wait for them, I’ll do it."
Either of those potential fights would be a rematch for Fitch.
Fitch first fought GSP in August of 2008. The fight saw Fitch drop a five round decision to the welterweight champion. The fight ended a 16-fight win streak for Fitch, including an 8-0 run in the UFC.
Fitch responded by going on a five-fight win streak, that led to a booking with BJ Penn. Their bout ended in a draw. A rematch was scheduled for UFC 132, but Fitch suffered a shoulder injury.
Fitch is recovering from the injury and plans to return to the Octagon in November or December.
