EliteXC's Demise: What Does This Mean For The MMA World?

That's right. EliteXC is gone, just as you, me, and everyone else with half a brain expected. Refer back to this article I wrote back at the end of July if you can't remember. So what led up to this demise? Amongst other things:

  • The company reported a loss a $55 million since it was founded in 2006.
  • Jared Shaw's ridiculous antics cage side at the last event. Making it obvious he wanted Kimbo to win.
  • Seth Petruzelli's commenting to a radio station about being paid extra by EliteXC to keep the fight with Kimbo standing.

So what does this mean for MMA? Well a lot of stars become free agents to be signed by other organizations. Stars like:

Eddie Alvarez (LW)
Nick Diaz (LW)
KJ Noons (LW)
Yves Edwards (LW)
Jake Shields (WW)
Robbie Lawler (MW)
Cung Le (MW)
Frank Shamrock (MW)
Joey Villasenor (MW)

If Affliction has any money left, they can seriously pump their weaker divisions (every division except HW). There were rumors of a merger between EliteXC and Affliction, but now it looks like they will have to dig into their pockets to get the stars they want. That is of course if they have any money left.

Dana White called EliteXC folding right from the beginning and he couldn't been more right. The UFC can make a killing on this. Grab as much as they can before the other various organizations can get to them and keep that stranglehold on the sport.

What does this mean for Kimbo? Who knows, and frankly I don't care. I'm sure some random organization will pick him up to put people in the seats. I just hope we don't need to see him on national TV anymore painting the wrong picture for MMA.

EliteXC, you had a good run, but now it's time to fade away with all of the other failed organizations. Let's hope the UFC get their TV deal soon, so we can show the world what real MMA looks like.
