I felt that I needed to write a quick article to start things off here on Bleacher Report. I love the idea of having a community of individuals writing articles that otherwise wouldn't be able to connect. I think that some of the best opinions and thoughts come from those outside the "professional" realm of sports reporting (maybe a little offense to ESPN), and from what I've read so far I like it.
So, I figure I will give it a go. And I will start with something simple, something that anyone outside of Cleveland may not realize. And something that irritates the crap out of me about Cubs fans especially.
This was supposed to be the year. The Cubs were supposed to go win the World Series on the 100-year anniversary of their last World Series title. Everyone was happy and cheery and couldn't wait for this drought to end. But unfortunately, and much to my chagrin, they blew it. Again.
ESPN has already started to make a big deal about this. Recently they ran another article about the Cubs misery and how sad everyone must be. I'm here to say that they need to shut the hell up.
Cry me a god-damned river that your baseball team hasn't won a World Series since 1908. Honestly, I feel really bad. It must be so hard to go that long without any championships. 101 years now...Ouch.
Cleveland, on the other hand, has only had to wait a short time since their last World Series title in 1948. Only a measly 60 years, nothing that anyone can't handle. This, however, is the last championship that Cleveland has won as a CITY. A freaking city! Out of all three major sports!
(Now, the first thing you may say is that the Cleveland Browns won a championship in 1964, and that would then be the last time. But that was the NFL championship, they didn't even play the AFL champion Buffalo Bills in a true "Super Bowl.")
Since then, Cleveland has experienced heart ache after heart ache, including just having bad teams. It has been 60 YEARS since Cleveland has had any major championship; my grandma was like twenty when that happened!
On the other hand, not only have you Chicago bitches had a Super Bowl champion in 1985 with your beloved Bears, you won six championships in eight years with the Chicago Bulls. I mean, I don't even think Cleveland teams have been in the playoffs that many times (and before you check me on that, that's called a hyperbole).
And if you want to look at baseball still, the White Sox won the World Series in 2005. I'm sure you could get behind that.
Oh, and even the Blackhawks (Cleveland doesn't have an NHL team) won an NHL Stanley Cup Finals in 1961.
The last time a Cleveland team won a championship, it was the Cleveland Crunch winning the indoor soccer league championship. Otto Orf was the goalie.
I mean come on, give me a break. Nobody has it worse than Cleveland, and ESPECIALLY not Chicago.
So next time I see someone whine about the Cubs, there is a good chance I am going to break some skulls.
Until next time, Go Browns!
