2008-09 NHL Players to Watch: Canadian Teams

This season will have a few players I personally will be keeping a close eye on.

Edmonton Oilers

This is a young team that won a lot of games in the Shootout last year, I expect them to keep away from the shootout this year and win close games.

Andrew Cogliano(C): Last Season 18G 27A for 45Pts. I expect him to build on a great rookie campaign. He has the tools to be a solid player in the NHL. I expect 25G and 40A for 65Pts this year from Cogliano. Depending on your depth at centre he might be worth picking up to fill in some holes.

Sam Gagner(C): Last Season 13G 36A for 49Pts. He carries a -21 over from last year. Don't expect that from him this year. I expect between -5 and 5. As for his points as shown by last year he can be an assist machine. 20G 47A, 67Pts. Him and Cogliano will have similar numbers. If you need goals more than assists, Cogliano is the better option.

Mathieu Garon(G): 47Games 26 Wins with a 2.66GAA and .913 Save Percentage last season. He will see more games this year, making him a solid #3 Fantasy goalie and depending on his play a #2 easily. 60Games, 35Wins, 2.90GAA, .922Svg%. If he's available pick him up!!!

Vancouver Canucks

Injuries pretty much ruined them last year, this year a much healthier defense is needed.

Alex Edler(D): Last Season 8G 12A 20Pts. I guarantee he will improve on those numbers this year. Probably with 10G and 32A, making him a good option for a pick up on the back end. His second season will be a good one.

Alexandre Burrows(LW):This guy will get you some points and penalty minutes. In leagues where penalty minutes count for the good, he's your man. His hard nose style gets him PIM but also gets him on the scoreboard a good amount of the time. 12G 19A for 31pts, will be about the norm for him, I'd expect 15G 25A out of him for a slight increase in point production, but 179PIM will move up to 200 this season.

Steve Bernier(RW): Everytime I see him play he impresses me, although its not that often. He is a great player and playing with the Sedin twins will only make him better. If he is available and RW is weak for you pick him up. 16G 16A for 32pts, will jump this year. 30G  30A 60Pts.

Calgary Flames

Dustin Boyd(C): I've been impressed by his speed, will it transfer into points for this young player? who knows. I don't think he'll have an amazing year, but he'll have stretches keep an eye on him. 7G and 5A for him last season in 48 games. In a full season those number will double plus a bit. 17G 12A for Boyd this season. He'll get them in stretches.

Rene Bourque(LW): Just like Boyd he'll be in stretches and his first stretch is happening right now as we speak. 3 Pts, 3 Games. Solid production for a play who's never hit 20G in his career so far. Last year's totals with the 'Hawks got him 10G and 14A. 20G and 30A for Bourque this season.

Todd Bertuzzi(W): Big Bert isn't going to return to his 97 Points form but he'll improve on last year. 40 Points in total(14G 26A). He'll score 25G and get 35A this season, making him a valueable winger, for parts of the season.

Toronto Maple Leafs

It'll be a slow season.

Luke Schenn(D): He will be an amazing player, don't think he'll be worth picking up this year, but in years to come he will be. He's easily one of the top 4 defensemen on this team. 5G 20A out of Schenn this season.

Nik Antropov(F): Antropov "the only top six forward on the team" will be expected to carry a big offensive load for the young team. He'll do that alright. Last year's 56 Pts, will improve, but by how much? I think 72Pts this season. 30G 32A.

Ottawa Senators

Filip Kuba(D): Coming over from Tampa where his Plus/Minus took a hit, he'll contribute as much as he already has this season, all year long, assists will come in bunches for Kuba. The occasional goal on the powerplay makes him a great #4 option. 6 and 25, will go to 8 and 34.

Brian Lee(D): He will have a steady season. Don't expect massive numbers, but Lee will replace Redden, and he'll do it very well. He will receive powerplay time and that will get him some points. At this point in time just watch him. 5G 18A from Lee this season.

Nick Foligno(LW): Last year he played well and worked hard for half the season in Ottawa. 45 games gave him 6goals and 3 assists. He will improve a lot this year and almost be worth a pick up. 20G and 22A will come out of him this season, and he'll be a very important part of the new Ottawa Senators.

Montreal Canadiens

Sergei Kostitsyn(LW): Living under the shadow of Andrei last season, Sergei will become his own person this season. He will match his brother's totals of last season. 26G 27A for Sergei this season.

Carey Price(G): How will his sophomore season go? Better than his rookie season. Price is ready for the limelight and is potential top 3 goalie in this league. 41 games, 24 wins, 2.56GAA and .920sv%. All numbers will improve this season. 70 Games, 42 wins, 2.50GAA and .932sv%.

Now that the Canadians teams are time, over the next little while I'll be doing teams by divisions, stay tuned.

Have anyone else I should watch on these teams(except the obvious) let me know!.
