LSU Football Recruiting: Is Coach Miles and LSU Having a Great Year ?
It could just be my perception, but the 2012 football recruiting at LSU has just not had the punch and excitement that it has had in previous Les Miles years, and there has just not been a buzz about this 2012 LSU recruiting class.
Although LSU has six 4-star commitments, the others are all instate players that are considered to be good quality players, but they are just not the players that everyone else is after.
These quality in state commitments could turn out justifying LSU's 2012 recruiting class, but only time will tell how good this class will be.
Sure, Avery Johnson (Patrick Peterson's little brother) is a very big time commitment, but even he considers himself to be a soft commitment to LSU, and he is even visiting and considering Alabama, Auburn and Florida State openly.
Why he has this attitude and hasn't fully committed to LSU after the legendary career that his brother Patrick Peterson has had is still puzzling to me. I mean, what else could he ask of this program?
Also, one of LSU's other 4-star commits, Toshiro Davis, is considered to be a soft commit.
However, on the bright side, LSU was able to steal Devante Bourgue, who is a 4-star Louisiana commitment from Texas A&M.
Lately, Texas A&M has been boasting that they have eight players from the state of Louisiana on their team, and they seem to be trying to prove they can go head-to-head against LSU for Louisiana talent and win.
After the great show and overwhelming defeat the LSU Tigers put on A&M in the Cotton Bowl, you would think recruiting would take on the opposite effect.
But I guess recruiting, like everything else, goes in circles, as LSU was once very successful in taking players from Georgia, but this year they have none so far.
In spite of the situations above, LSU is still ranked No. 9 by Rivals in recruiting, so I guess it is hard to say they are not doing well, but I guess we are spoiled by those top-five classes of just a few years ago.
Also, when you look and see schools like Florida State under former LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, Alabama under former LSU head Coach Nick Saban, and Florida under former LSU defensive coordinator Will Muschamp being ranked ahead of LSU, it makes it hard to be happy with being ranked No. 9.
LSU has three commitments ranked in the ESPN top 150 so far, but of the remaining uncommitted players in this group, none of them list LSU as being on their list of consideration.
So, I think it is time for coach Les Miles, Frank Wilson, and Steve Kraigthorpe to get out in the region and sell these regional players on the advantages of playing for The LSU Tigers.
States like Texas have been so productive for LSU in the past, but this year we have not seen any commitments, and other southern states that have contributed to the Tiger's success in the past are also missing from the commitment list.
There is still lots of time left for LSU to get involved with these guys, but they are going to have to show a more determined attitude about signing these regional players and stealing a few with Nick, Jimbo, and others.
