WWE SmackDown: What Next for the Men from the Corre? Spoilers from Friday Night

Carrie DunnApr 23, 2011

I think it's fairly safe to say that we are seeing the end-times of the Corre. They've been used basically as Keystone Cops villains for the past few months, running on for two minutes and getting booed, being thoroughly squashed at WrestleMania in a match that may well have lasted less time than the pointless Snooki-fest, and now the tension is showing.

It wasn't always like this, of course. Once upon a time Wade Barrett got to menace his way round the WWE, while his acolytes (particularly Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel) snickered behind him. But as Barrett keeps reminding us, there's no such thing as a leader of the Corre (even though he totally is), and they're falling apart.

Ezekiel Jackson doesn't seem to know what's going on with his character. He had a singles match last week, and this week he's been loitering around the ring while his Corre colleagues take centre stage. However, this triggered all sorts of disharmony.

When Slater and Gabriel lost their tag-team championship to Big Show and Kane (of all people), they bickered with Jackson as to whose fault it was; as Barrett defended his intercontinental title, he told Jackson to get out of the way as he wasn't helping.

Could this distance between him and the rest be leading to a face turn?

Gabriel seems to me to be the most likely successful face. He looks the part, for starters, and the previous tensions he had with Barrett in FCW could now accumulate into a proper feud (my favourite quote from Gabriel on commentary was an outraged, "Has he no morals?" about Barrett). But will he also be feuding with tag-team partner and best chum Slater?

They had a bit of a set-to last night as they argued about why they lost the belt, culminating in Slater shoving Gabriel to the floor. Feuding former tag-team partners is always a winner, but personally I'd miss the Slater/Gabriel dynamic—they clearly get on well in real life (their cryptic Twitter messages to each other are hilarious) and they work together well too.

As for Barrett, well, he doesn't really like anybody, does he? This man is a villainous character through and through, and he does it brilliantly. He could feud with anyone and make it work. He'll obviously be staying heel, but will he form a new group of outcasts and baddies, or will he head into singles competition?

Of course, much of this will become clear at the draft—but in the meantime, let's speculate. What will the Corre do next?
