NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Game Recap

What can I say except that was the sloppiest, most undeniably terrible game I have ever watched the Wings play.

Not only did it seem that the Wings were playing with absolutely no hustle at all, but they were making embarrassingly sloppy passes all night, turning over the puck at least once a minute, and putting very little pressure on Leafs net minder Vesa Toskala.

Not many people are saying Toronto played a good game, perhaps because this was not the case at all. Despite the unspeakable levels of awfulness that the Wings reached, they still out-shot Toronto 37-29. The Leafs were able to score two of their goals because they were gift-wrapped by Wings net minder Chris Osgood and forward Daniel Cleary.

The Leafs were able to score first on a power play with only 26 seconds left in the first period, with Tomas Kopecky in the box for interference. A scramble in front occurred and Osgood swept the puck away from the players right onto the waiting stick of Pavel Kubina, who proceeded to slam it home.

The Leafs managed to pull ahead by two when Dominic Moore was able to deposit the puck behind Chris Osgood late in the second period. The Wings replied just 90 seconds later when Tomas Holmstrom scored a goal from where he always does, standing in front of the net.

The Leafs got another break when Daniel Cleary made an especially bad giveaway at the Wings' blueline with Stuart and Kronwall starting to go off for a change. Kulemin managed to take the puck in alone, roofing it for the 3-1 lead.

The Wings would get a goal back on a power play when Tomas Holmstrom scored another from his office in front of the net. All in all, the Wings looked really bad this evening. Hopefully they can fix it against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night.

Detroit Red Wings Player of the Game

Tomas Holmstrom. Easy choice here, as he appeared to be the only one fore-checking hard and he was rewarded with two goals on the night.

  1. "turning over the puck at least once a minute", that would mean there were at least 60 turnovers in last night game.
"putting very little pressure on Leafs net minder Vesa Toskala" The wings put 37 shots on Toskala in last nights game, thats not pressure?
Do a little more resarch in your articles. Just accept that Toronto played a good game.

    1. Hmm, looks like this little prepubescent idiot hasn't learned what a hyperbole is (Look it up buddy!), and many of those 37 shots were perimeter ones, if you didn't notice, I also noted that the Wings did have 37 shots.... a little reading comprehension is nice. Looks like I'm not the one who needs to do research, thanks for playing and have fun in last place this year! :)

  2. Yeah I noticed you said he faced 37 shots, but still how is it not presure.

  3. Hi Adam, let me take a guess, you are a Wings fan--- sorta obvious. Look, I understand that the Wings did not play their best game. But guess what, it wasn't their worst either. They got beat, it happens sometimes. Console yourself, they will win 50 odd games, and contend for the cup. It just doesn't look good on you Wing's fans when you fall all over yourself making excuses. Give the Leafs credit, they skated, the checked, and they got the breaks- loved the pass from Osgood to Kubina, I think maybe Osgood is on the take( joking)-- and I guess you can tell what team I am a fan of!

    1. It's simple enough. It's game 1. They just got off a long summer of boozing from the Stanley Cup and had a lengthy delay for raising the banner. There will be a minor hang over. It's natural. Enjoy it while it lasts Toronto. If you beat Montreal tomorrow night, then let's start talking Leafs hockey again like it matters.

<3 God Bless and go Wed Wings.

  4. "Not many people are saying Toronto played a good game, perhaps because this was not the case at all"

    WTF???

"little prepubescent idiot"? And you're a WHOLE 2 years older... you hyperbully! BTW Tyler is not little, he's 5' 11"

Seems to me the boys in red and white are the "laughing stock of the league" after losing to the little boy blue wonders, n'est ce pas?

    1. Nah, The Wings just beat Ottawa while out shooting them 42-22, while the Leafs just got destroyed by Montreal, 6-1..... Sorry, maybe I just should of said laughing stock of the league only for the last 41 years. Also, that first quote you have their is an editing mistake by someone else, just click on article history and you will see that. Thanks anyways for the comment man.

  5. Btw, The Wings looked sloppy because the Leafs were making them look like that.

    1. Oh for sure, I forgot about the whole Leafs have special powers thing. How else could you explain the fact that every Wings pass missed it's mark by a couple of feet almost every time. It couldn't be that the Wings were sloppy, the Leafs can move the puck with their minds! Oh well, it looks like the Leafs fans are back down to earth after tonight's pummeling and Detroit's convincing win over Ottawa (out shot them by 20 and would have won by three of four if Gerber didn't suddenly decide to be a good goalie) ;).

  6. The Leafs DO have special powers. How else would you explain four decades of Stanleyness?

  7. The leafs were the better team in this game all the Deriot fans need to accept that

    1. I never said that the Wings were the better team, can you please quote me and show me where? No, you can't, because it never happened..... I did say that the Leafs didn't play as good as a lot of fans think they did, but they obviously outplayed the Wings. Heck, a junior team could have outplayed the Wings on Thursday.
