WWE: Cheer Up, Sin Cara! Shockmaster & the 10 Most Botched Ring Entrances Ever

Alfred KonuwaJun 7, 2018

It has become painfully clear over the past week that WrestleMania season is indeed over in WWE.Ā Ā  RAW ratings are down, Edge retired and one of the biggest news items of the week has revolved around Sin Cara's beleaguered entrance and Vince McMahon's disdain for such a previously heralded stunt.Ā

Sin Cara's struggles with an otherwise impressive entrance, where the new WWE sensation attempts to clear the top ropes via trampoline, has been subject of an odd amount of scrutiny as talk has already surfaced of either scrapping or changing the entrance altogether just three weeks into his WWE career.

While Sin Cara's entrance woes are contributing to a handful of nagging problems that reportedly have the Lucha Libre star a bit rattled going into WWE-style matches, Sin Cara isn't the first pro wrestler to experience malfunctions during an entrance.Ā

In fact, botched entrances have spanned generations, even contributing to some of the most memorable gag reels in the history of sports entertainment.

A comment by Robson Souza, comparing Sin Cara's shaky entrances to that of Shockmaster's infamously botched debut, inspired me to compile a list of the ten most botched ring entrances in pro wrestling history.

The next time Sin Cara is feeling blue, or even nervous, a soothing remedy could be to simply bookmark this very article, and be consoled by brief clips of ring entrance ineptitude unintentionally personified by the men and women of sports entertainment.

10. Poor Ringside Attendant "Takes a Bump" During Ultimate Warrior Entrance

1 of 10

The Ultimate Warrior's famed high-octane entrance was a botch waiting to happen with the indefatigable Warrior sprinting furiously toward the ring upon the playing of his music.Ā

At one particular WWE live event at Madison Square Garden in 1990, the inevitable came to fruition when the Ultimate Warrior steamrolled a poor bystander as he turned the corner of the ring.Ā

The congested area was already a hazard for running at the fervent pace Warrior did, as evidenced by the then WWE Champion hastily throwing a chair out of his way before ultimately colliding with the ringside attendant.Ā

9. Ultimo Dragon Falls During WrestleMania XX Etrance

2 of 10

The Ultimo Dragon's career never really got off the ground in WWE, and apparently neither did the Ultimo Dragon.Ā

The Ultimo Dragon, who in many ways was supposed to pan out in the fed the same way Rey Mysterio Jr. did given his decorated career coming in, created a telling microcosm of his WWE career when he slipped and fell on the biggest stage WWE had to offer during his entrance.

It wasn't too long after Ultimo's WrestleMania 20 stumble that WWE would part ways with him once his contract expired.Ā

Given Sin Cara's similarity to this situation, perhaps this isn't the best slide to use in order to cheer up about life in WWE for an international star.Ā

8. Melina Botches Entrance at Survivor Series 2007

3 of 10

Melina by far has the most seductive entrance for a Diva in all of WWE.Ā  In the pre-PG days, Melina's entrance of performing the splits on the apron before sliding into the ring was something of legend.Ā

While the entrance is still impressive, Melina's mandatory choice of wearing tights rather than a skirt has definitely taken away from the seductive aspect of it all.Ā

During Survivor Series of 2007, however, as Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler were talking up Melina's "provocative entrance", the poor Diva slipped on the ring apron before hastily sliding under the bottom rope to complete the botch .

7, Paul London Too Athletic for His Own Good

4 of 10

Paul London was one of the more exciting WWE stars as the undersized performer carved out a small niche alongside Brian Kendrick as high flying tag team specialists who held the WWE Tag Team Titles for close to a year.Ā

Paul London's athleticism came back to bite him when he sprinted and slid his way into the ring only to continue to slide out of the ring.Ā

6. Rey Mysterio Trap Door Gets Trapped at WrestleMania 26

5 of 10

Once upon a time, Rey Mysterio Jr. used to be propelled from underground as part of a his spectacular entrance.Ā

In present day, likely due to the toll that years of pro wrestling has taken on Mysterio's injury-plagued body, Mysterio saves his famous trap door entrance for special occasions.Ā

WrestleMania 26 was one of those occasions, however during his entrance before his match with CM Punk, Mysterio's trap door malfunctioned and Mysterio was not shot up from underneath following his pyro.Ā

After a lengthy delay, Mysterio improvised, pulling himself up onto the stage before making his way to the ring.Ā

5. HBK's Metal Malfunction on RAW

6 of 10

HBK's flamboyant pre-match ring attire was just begging to be part of some malfunction, and it's amazing that he pretty much went his entire career without having too much trouble with such lavish get up.

One particular episode of RAW in 2005, however, was an exception as Michaels' metal chains became stuck in the metal walkway during his entrance before a match with Edge.Ā

Michaels quickly and prematurely abandoned the outfit before acknowledging the mistake with his shrewd body language like only a performer of his caliber can.Ā

4. Hawk Startled by His Own Pyro

7 of 10

Hawk's infamous fall off the WWE titantron was not the only time the embattled tag team legend would fall during WWE programming.Ā

The Road Warrior comically fell to the floor upon hearing his own pyro during an episode of RAW, as the Legion of Doom steadily approached their twilight years.Ā

Video of Hawk's fall has since vanished from the Internet, so allow me to provide you with another botched entrance in the form of Hawk's on-camera entrance during a terrible Vader promo.Ā

3. Guardrail Collapses During HBK's Entrance

8 of 10

You can't blame this particular botch on Shawn Michaels' entrance gear, or Shawn Michaels himself.Ā

This was a security issue, as the guard rail collapsed during HBK's entrance at a WWE In Your House Pay-Per-View.Ā  HBK is lucky that none of the fans who spilled onto the floor were of the rabid or feral variety.

2. Undertaker Caught on Fire During Entrance at Elimination Chamber

9 of 10

Prior to his match at the 2010 Elimination Chamber PPV, the Undertaker took an uncharacteristically quick pace during his entrance.Ā

Michael Cole cunningly covered up Taker's brisk walk to the ring on commentary by immediately commenting on the fact that the Undertaker was ready to get in there and compete.

To viewers at home, this looked like nothing more than an odd power walk to the ring by a man who is known for his slow saunter.Ā

However fans in attendance live saw a completely different story, as it was later revealed that the Undertaker had been burned by his own pyro at the beginning of what was supposed to be a slow saunter to the ring.Ā

Undertaker once again showed his legendary toughness when he went on to finish the Elimination Chamber match, competing for an extended period of time despite suffering from 1st and 2nd degree burns.Ā

1. Shockmaster

10 of 10

Synonymous with all that is wrong and/or poorly executed in pro wrestling, the Shockmaster's infamous debut in 1990 was one of the most unintentionally comical debuts in the history of sports entertainment.Ā

The debuting Shockmaster, who was pretty much Fred Ottman in his daughter's Storm Trooper's helmet, was supposed to "shock the world" when he was given a rousing introduction by Sting and the British Bulldog. Ā

Instead, Shockmaster inadvertently entertained, tripping and falling to the ground as his helmet came off, before making a not-so-smooth recovery. Ā

Shockmaster would then begin to pantomime, apparently expecting the gravely and robotic voice-over to begin speaking, however no such voice occurred initially.Ā

If you listen closely, Ole Anderson, the original robotic voice-over for the Shockmaster, could apparently be heard laughing before undertaking his duties as the Shockmaster voice-over.Ā

The whole segment was a mess, compromising an otherwise unpromising gimmick for Ottman while leading to a comic gem in the never-ending world of online clips of pro wrestling botches.Ā

Honorable Mention:Ā  Vince McMahon at the 2005 Royal Rumble.Ā
