Well, it looks like Sonnen was very close to joining the cowards in the light heavyweight division. Sonnen does a lot of talking about how he isn't afraid to fight anyone.
“The thing about Chael is when he does all these interviews, and he sounds crazy when he says ‘I’ll fight any man God ever created.’ He’s telling the truth,” Sonnen’s manager, Mike Roberts of MMA Inc., told MMAWeekly Radio recently.
If you don't believe that, well Sonnen wanted to face Quinton "Rampage" Jackson after he found out Thiago Silva wouldn't be able to fight Rampage.
“When Rampage’s initial opponent went down before all this fiasco was going on, before Hamill stepped in to take the fight, when that went down I was with Chael and he was like ‘I’d love to fight Rampage.’ And I was like, ‘but you’re at 185-pounder’ and he was like, ‘I’d fight him in a heartbeat,’” Roberts said.
Sonnen hasn't fought at 205 pounds since UFC 55 when he lost to Renato Sobral by second round submission. But his manager still doesn't feel it would be a big deal for Sonnen to make the jump.
“Fighting big fights at 205 would not be a problem for him,” Roberts said.
Sonnen isn't going to be a picky fighter if he does make the jump, choosing instead to fight whoever.
“[Chael said] whoever they think is the toughest guy, that’s the guy I want,” Roberts said.
