Player Duels: Rio Ferdinand v. Nemanja Vidic

Today's duel is between two of the best centre-backs in Europe today - Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

They have formed a very strong centre-back partnership during their time together at Manchester United. Both have strength, pace and are good both in the air and on the floor. As a partnership there a few who can challenge them in Europe.

Rio Ferdinand

Twice the most expensive defender in the world, Rio Ferdinand has been one of the top defenders in England for the best part of a decade now. His positioning, sheparding, and tackling skills make him a solid defender, while his heading and ease on the ball can make him a threat coming forward as well.

So far in his career he has played in 515 games, scoring 11 goals in the process. He has captained Leeds, Manchester United and England before, and is the current vice-captain of the national side, who he has won 70 caps for, scoring two goals.

He has won the Carling Cup, Community Shield, Champions League, and Premier League while at Man United, and has been named in the Premier League's Team of the Year four times in his career.

Nemanja Vidic

A virtual unknown before his move to United, since then he has become one of the strongest defenders in Europe. His no-nonsense style has drawn much praise and his bravery and physical presence make him a threat up-front and a fearsome defender at the back.

So far in his career he has scored 28 goals in 229 games, an impressive record for a defender. He has won 33 caps for his native Serbia, scoring two goals.

He has also won the Carling Cup, Community Shield, Champions League, and Premier League, along with three more trophies at Red Star Belgrade. He has twice been included in the PFA team of the Year.
