I love the Cubs.

I hate the Cubs.

I love the way they played during the regular season, winning 97 games.

I hate the way they played in the playoffs, getting swept by the Dodgers.

I love Wrigley Field—the ivy in full bloom, the roar of the crowd.

I hate when they call it "the friendly confines."

I love the rich tradition and heritage of the Cubs, one of baseball's charter teams.

I hate the century of losing.

I love our offense during the regular season; it was the best in the league.

I hate our offense in the playoffs, it is nonexistant.

I love Carlos Zambrano's passion.

I hate the way he loses his cool on the mound.

I love that the Cubs finally made a splash and signed a big name free agent for once.

I hate that it was Alfonso Soriano.

I love that the Cubs went outside the box to sign a Japanese player.

I hate that they're spending $12 million per year on a glorified defensive replacement.

I love the way Mark DeRosa plays the game.

I hate that we couldn't get Brian Roberts.

I love the talent of Rich Harden.

I hate his fragile nature.

I love the seventh inning stretch.

I hate the stupid guest conductors.

I love summer in Chicago.

I hate winter in Chicago.

I love the old charm of Wrigley Field.

I hate the lack of basic ammenities.

I love the new song by Eddie Vedder.

I hate "Go Cubs Go."

I love the Cubs.

Come to think of it...I hate the Cubs.

  1. HaHa very nice

    1. Just like to change thigns up now and again...a curveball, if you will.

  2. Simply and perfectly said.

    1. Thanks Claire. I should have ended with "I love the Cubs" however. You can't change a tiger's stripes.

  3. I hate the ending. This better be an anger piece written in the angst of another playoff "run"

    1. Joe, I hate the Cubs for what they put me through...even tho I love 'em too.

  4. Couldn't have said it better myself! But I, too, will always love the Cubs (even when I hate them).

    1. I hear ya, Steve. Thanks.

  5. This simplicity trumps the expression of angst I was trying to convey in my pathetic wounded cub fan rant on here.

Reverse psychology is something I really believe in... not so much the Cubs anymore.... ohh, my bleeding fanheart, make it stop!

    1. I've noticed your "reverse psychology" Mark. And believe me, I wrote other pieces just after it happened (and while it was happening) that we much less dreamy and more angst-ridden. I went thru all the emotions this year - sadness, disgust, anger, frustration, emptiness...'84, '03 and '08, talk about a roller coaster ride!
