Why is Leafs Management Blind to Toronto's Defensive Woes?

The Toronto Maple Leafs are 2-7-1 in their last 10 games and not by any means the worst in the league.  Toronto has always been in a market where by they are asked and expected to play to a high level based on fan support. 

Finding a ticket for a Leaf game is very hard.  To get a close seat to the ice is next to impossible.  Season ticket holders and corporate sales fill the majority of the good seats.  Still, there is a strong fan base that follow from their own home or respective bar. 

These fans range from young children who learned of the Leafs history from either their parents that remember the good ole days or just simply watching regional hockey night broadcasts.  As a Leaf fan you want the best for your heroes.  You want to see goals, shut outs, great plays and here the goal horn go off, but lately its been tough as a fan.

How does it feel to let a fan down?  How does it feel to make that much money and go home at night and have that feeling you like the money but the job right now sucks.   Most normal working people feel that way at times, or the opposite,  the money isnt good so the job sucks or both.  As a team you need to feel good about who your playing with.  Confidence that your mates around you are gonna be there as much as you are.  The feeling that everyone is here for the same purpose other then money including the owners, managers and others involved in the team process.  But if that feeling isnt there how does everyone respond.  

  As a fan and a follower of stats ive found myself trying to find an answer to the short falls of Toronto.  Yes giving up 3 goals after playing such a good hockey game to end up losing is simply taking the want out of winning.  Toronto has one of the worst goals against in the league with Detroit having the best and even teams like Philadelphia having a good record in that department.  For that reason it makes winning hockey games alot easier when you can limit the amount of goals scored against.  There is a saying "A good defense is a strong offense."  That saying is definatly good as a Toronto driver but not one for this hockey club.  

 For years changes have been made to the forwards, management, goalies and minor changes to the defensive aspect.  So far non of which have brought any sign of possiblity to a contender.  Currently, Nicklas Lidstrom is going for yet another Norris Trophy, possibly being the best defenseman the league has ever seen.  His plus minus this year is 34.  Plus minus is a stat that counts goals for or against as a player while you were on the ice.  Lidstrom has 34 goals plus!  11 Maple Leaf players on in the plus category and combined only at up to 33.  

 Have the players stopped playing cause they have been playing the same type of hockey in Toronto for years.  If the seats are filled, dont fix it?  How long is this going to continue?  Trading away superstars or big names will not fix the lack of defense.  Toronto needs a solid Veteran or solid defensemen, maybe more then one to salvage whats left.  If no one else cares why would the players?  Its not the Toskala's fault, and its not all of the forwards fault but I have the defenseman and the owners to blame for this.  You cant win a game without defense pure and simple.  You cant win without heart.  The fans want winners and its hard time someone pull the trigger.
