WWE WrestleMania 27: The Miz Could Be Set Up To Fail

Robert AitkenMar 31, 2011

We are six days shy of WrestleMania 27, when The Miz will main event as the WWE Champion against John Cena. Common belief suggests that John Cena will win the championship, hold the title up as pyro goes off, and the pay-per-view fades away from our television screens.

After all, John Cena has been in a world title match for every WrestleMania since defeating JBL for his very first world championship at WrestleMania 21. Since then, Cena has walked away with the belt every year excluding WrestleMania 24, when he was pinned in a triple threat match against HHH and Randy Orton. Moreover, since losing that match, Cena has gone in as the challenger for the last three WrestleManias, including this one. Just like the theme of the show, it seems "written in the stars" for Cena to walk out of Atlanta with the WWE Championship.

So what does that do for The Miz? Well, we can all see that The Miz has what it takes to be a world champion. Any doubt about that notion has been erased over the last 126 days. By WrestleMania, The Miz will have had as long of a stint as champion as only a select few have had in the past ten years.

Presently speaking, The Miz's first championship reign is within the thirty longest single reigns in the history of the company. That one reign is longer than any reign ever held by greats such as The Rock, Kurt Angle, Edge and Sheamus. In fact, The Miz's one reign has lasted longer than the two reigns of Big Show, the one reign of Chris Jericho, and the three reigns of Mankind. If The Miz does somehow retain the championship and make it to RAW the night after WrestleMania, The Miz's first reign as champion will be just as long as that of the late Eddie Guerrero.

I believe that The Miz has fit himself into the slot that Chris Jericho left behind. While it seemed like it months ago, it is now all but certain now that the short-lived alliance between the duo was a literal changing of the guard from one generation to the next.

I can only hope that being a world champion is not a one-time thing for The Miz. The Miz's career has come full circle into the biggest match of his life. The Miz's rise into awesomeness began with trying to pick on John Cena and it has led to him walking into WrestleMania with the WWE Championship belt.

I would like to hope that The Miz will not lose the belt on Sunday, but signs are pointing toward this being so. I would imagine that The Miz would have a rematch for the belt at Extreme Rules, which is the next pay-per-view. The Miz is also on the poster for Over the Limit, the pay-per-view following Extreme Rules. While this often means nothing, you can venture a guess that The Miz will float in the main event for at least the first few weeks after WrestleMania.
