UFC 132 Results: Ranking the Top 10 Bantamweights in the UFC

Tim McTiernanJul 5, 2011

UFC 132 was possibly the best PPV of the year so far.

Carlos Condit showed he belongs at the top of the division.

Tito Ortiz showed he's got a bit of gas left in the tank.

It was shown yet again that MMA judging needs improvement.

Chris Leben ended the career of a legend.

The two fighters in the main event were the top two bantamweights in the world. Dominick Cruz avenged his only career loss and put on a hell of a fight with Urjiah Faber in the process. Since Faber lost though, did he fall down the rankings?

Read on to find out.

10. Michael McDonald

1 of 11

Michael McDonald (13-1) is a young, upcoming prospect, and at only 20 years old, he is looking quite impressive.

Of his 13 wins, he has finished his opponent in 11 of them, and he has also avenged his only career loss.

In addition to all his finishes, McDonald won "Fight of the Night" for his battle with Edwin Figueroa at UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis.

In his last fight, McDonald won a split decision over Chris Cariaso at UFC 130.

9. Renan Barao

2 of 11

Renan Barao (26-1, one NC) is one of the best prospects currently under ZUFFA control.

Barao is 3-0 in the three fights he's had in ZUFFA. In his UFC debut at UFC 130, he defeated Cole Escovedo via unanimous decision.

In fact, that one loss on his record was in his first career fight, and it was a split decision.

Barao will definitely be a title challenger at some point in the future, but his next fight has yet to be announced.

8. Eddie Wineland

3 of 11

Eddie Wineland (18-7-1) is the former and first WEC bantamweight champion.

Wineland's last fight saw him lose a No. 1 contender's match to Urijah Faber via unanimous decision. Prior to that, Wineland was on a four-fight winning streak, including two straight "Knockout of the Night."

Wineland's next fight against Joseph Benavidez at UFC Live: Hardy vs. Lytle will determine if he can stay relevant in a stacked bantamweight division.

7. Scott Jorgensen

4 of 11

Scott Jorgensen (12-4) is a one-time challenger to the WEC bantamweight title.

Jorgensen is 4-1 in his last five, with the one loss coming against Dominick Cruz for the WEC bantamweight title and the inaugural UFC bantamweight title.

Jorgensen made his UFC debut in The Ultimate Fighter 13 finale against Ken Stone, a fight he won via knockout at 4:01 of the first round.

His next fight has yet to be announced.

6. Miguel Torres

5 of 11

Miguel Torres (39-4) is the former and long-time WEC bantamweight champion.

Torres has had a bit of a bad stretch over his past five fights going 2-3, including the loss of his title. His losses have all come to top-tier competition though, so he may still have something to offer, and he may still have another shot at the belt.

Or maybe Torres' three losses of late could signal that his best days are behind him.

His next fight has yet to be announced.

5. Brian Bowles

6 of 11

Brian Bowles (10-1) is the former WEC bantamweight champion and is currently on a two-fight winning streak.

Bowles' only career loss came against Dominick Cruz with the bantamweight title on the line. The fight was stopped after the second round, as Bowles had a broken hand.

He appeared outclassed in the fight against Cruz, but he is well on his way to earning another shot at the title.

His next fight has yet to be announced.

4. Demetrious Johnson

7 of 11

Demetrious Johnson (10-1) is a fast-rising star in the bantamweight division.

Mighty Mouse has been impressive since joining the UFC, winning unanimous decisions over Kid Yamamoto and longtime bantamweight kingpin, Miguel Torres.

Many may have Johnson pegged as the next contender for Cruz's belt, but no announcements have been made.

We'll just have to wait and see.

3. Joseph Benavidez

8 of 11

Joseph Benavidez (14-2) would be undefeated and would probably be the bantamweight champion—if not for Dominick Cruz.

At WEC 42, Cruz handed Benavidez his first career loss, then at WEC 50, with the bantamweight title on the line, he handed Benavidez his second.

Benavidez is a top-tier bantamweight, but had nothing to hang with the champ.

Unfortunately, a Faber-Benavidez match is not likely to happen anytime soon. The two are training partners, which creates a difficult situation, as they are two top bantamweights.

2. Urijah Faber

9 of 11

Urijah Faber (25-5) fell short in his quest to become the third two-division champion in ZUFFA history when he was defeated via unanimous decision by Dominick Cruz.

It was a competitive fight in which both fighters had a shot at winning the decision, but it was Cruz who came away the victor.

Faber is now 4-4 in his last eight, with all four losses being title fights. He may be on his way to becoming the next Jon Fitch.

1. Dominick Cruz

10 of 11

And Dominick Cruz (18-1) retains his UFC bantamweight championship.

What a great fight he and Faber put on.

Cruz proved he has evolved and improved from his last fight with Faber, and Cruz handed him his fourth straight loss in a title fight.

Cruz can now be talked about as a dominant champion with three defenses against tough competition. Look for him to be in control of the division for quite a while longer.
