Throughout the lengthy history of NASCAR, drivers have been known for their ability to provide humorous and infamous interviews almost as much as they have been known for their ability to perform exceptionally well behind the wheel.
Today, drivers like Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick provide quotable interviews on par with what they have delivered their entire careers. Of course, the sport was partially drawn into the public eye through Darrell "Jaws" Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt, both known for their charismatic and notable words with the media.
Here are the top 20 driver interviews that you need to see, presented in no particular order.
"Just imagine if all those (second-place finishes) were wins."
-Kyle Busch to ESPN's Mike Massaro after tying Jack Ingram's record of nine consecutive top-two finishes in the Nationwide Series after a second-place finish at Iowa Speedway on Aug. 1, 2009. (about 2:55 into this video)
"Well, ain't nothin' we did to him until the very end right there...Racing in the Nationwide Series without having any Cup experience, (you have to) learn how to let guys go at times...We just don't roll like that, it's not the thing to do...You throw a rock, I'm going to throw a concrete rock back."
-Denny Hamlin to ESPN's Dave Burns about Brad Keselowski's rough driving during a Nationwide Series event at Lowe's Motor Speedway on May 24, 2008. (about 55 seconds into the video)
"That's the most pathetic racing tire I've ever been on in my professional career. They exited out of Formula One. They exited out of the IRL. They exited out of CART. They exited out of the World of Outlaws and there's a reason for that because Goodyear can't build a tire that's worth a crap."
-Tony Stewart to Fox's Matt Yocum regarding the difficulty involved with his second-place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 9, 2008.
"I got run over by a bug-eyed dummy, I guess."
-Sterling Marlin on being wrecked by Greg Biffle at Watkins Glen International on Aug. 15, 2004.
"Ricky Rudd took a f--king cheap shot at us. If he's going to take a cheap shot, he'll get one back, I promise you that."
-Kevin Harvick on being wrecked by Ricky Rudd in the closing stages of the 2003 fall race at Richmond International Raceway.
"I'm still not a very big fan of these things. I can't stand to drive them. They suck."
-Kyle Busch on the Car of Tomorrow after winning at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 25, 2007.
"Well, I could say that the media center's getting boring in here, and it's too safe because you guys have four legs on your chairs, so we could start sawing legs off. What do you think about that?"
-Tony Stewart regarding driver safety during a Feb. 2010 press conference at Daytona International Speedway. (about 4:05 in)
"I don't know, rocket scientist. I mean, I'm sitting here with a backup car...I'm ticked right now. I'm not happy, I'm not cordial, I'm not nice, I'm not anything and I shouldn't be."
-Tony Stewart to ESPN's Mike Massaro after wrecking in final practice for the 2009 Daytona 500.
"If I were (Danica Patrick), the biggest challenge I'd have is trying to keep the media away from me so I could actually think about what I'm doing and drive the race car. I've started turning the TV off. I feel like I'm watching reruns. I can't believe I'm actually getting interviewed today."
-Tony Stewart to ESPN's Jamie Little regarding Danica Patrick's Nationwide Series debut. (about 2:35 in)
"Jeff Gordon came in here? Wow. That's awesome, man. I never would have thought Jeff Gordon would have came in here. That's pretty cool. He was sitting right here? Oh my god, I'm sitting in the seat Jeff Gordon sat in. That's awesome."
-Tony Stewart in the Kansas Speedway media room after winning the 2009 race at the track.
"I think you always think things the wrong way. I'm very impressed with you, (Kasey Kahne) actually came to apologize. Thank you."
-Juan Pablo Montoya's sarcastic response to ESPN's Vince Welch asking about his contact with Kahne during the 2009 Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500.
"I guess I have a teammate who can't stand to be No. 2. I went to the top and got a huge run on the topside and I was going to clear about three of them. (Jason Leffler) drove up two lanes and hit me. I don't know what else I could have done to miss it."
-Kyle Busch after being wrecked by teammate Jason Leffler in a 2008 Nationwide Series race at Dover International Speedway.
"He's supposed to be my teammate, and you saw what the hell he did too. That's fine, you know, because Jimmy Spencer never forgets."
-Jimmy Spencer invoking the use of the third-person point of view after being caught up in a wreck in a 2002 Nationwide Series race.
"They gave me wings, but I didn't expect to be flying around in circles."
-Boris Said after he was spun out by Tony Stewart while driving the No. 83 Toyota for Red Bull Racing at Watkins Glen International last August.
"We were racing with the 29, and he let me go in the middle of the straightaway and decided to dump me in the next turn. I don't know what his deal is with me, but it's probably not his fault. You know, his wife wears the firesuit in the family and tells him what to do, so it's probably not his fault."
-Joey Logano regarding his incident with Kevin Harvick in the closing stages of the June 2010 race at Pocono.
"This weekend, this place is absolutely treacherous. I'm a race car driver, but you still try not to put yourself in precarious positions. They had a really, really nice facility here and Chris Powell (Las Vegas Motor Speedway general manager) and his staff destroyed a really nice race track because they were afraid we were getting strung out."
-Tony Stewart on Las Vegas Motor Speedway's 2007 resurfacing.
This isn't a notable quote provided in an interview as it is an amusing series of them. When CNN/Sports Illustrated and TNT provided coverage of Sprint Cup qualifying in the early 2000s, Kevin Harvick often frequented the network's pit studio before or after his attempt.
Most of the time, these appearances would often involve Harvick and pit reporter Matt Yocum taking playful shots at each other. Harvick even dressed as Yocum to cover qualifying at Rockingham in 2001.
A YouTube search of "Kevin Harvick qualifying" will unearth such humorous gems as this.
"They have a golden horseshoe stuck up their ass."
-Kevin Harvick after Johnson's win at Auto Club Speedway last October.
"You know, everybody thinks Michael is this good guy...he's a piece of s--t."
-Robby Gordon after Michael Waltrip spun him out at the September 2005 race in New Hampshire.
This isn't an interview, per se, but it is highly amusing. I'd write what Montoya says in the video, but it is a bit vulgar.
Thoughts? I know this was a very Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart heavy list. Comment below.
