With the recent announcement that the WEC will be getting rid of the light heavyweight and middleweight classes it means that WEC middleweight champion and MMA superstar Paulo Filho will soon become a prominent member of the UFC middleweight division.
Zuffa, LLC is the parent company of both the WEC and the UFC and so Filho will simply slide over onto the UFC roster.
For fair-weathered MMA fans who don't know much about Filho he is currently ranked as the #2 middleweight fighter in the world by TopGunMMA behind fellow Brazilian, friend, and former training partner Anderson Silva.
According to Anderson Silva himself in an interview with Tatame.com, "Paulo Filho is ... absolute in this division, there's nobody to beat him. In my opinion, he's the best middleweight."
That is high praise coming from arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Filho is currently the WEC middleweight champion and has a professional MMA record of 16 - 0. He was 8 - 0 in the PRIDE organization before joining the WEC where he has gone 2 - 0. His notable career victories include Kaz Misaki, Ryo Chonan, Murilo Rua, and Chael Sonnan.
Filho used to train in Brazil alongside the aforementioned Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Ricardo Arona, Vitor Belfort, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Currently he trains in Ludlow, MA with Gabriel Gonzaga and Team Link.
Simply put, Filho is one of the best grapplers in the world. He is a fire hydrant at 5'8" and 185 pounds. His strength can be overwhelming. He uses his wrestling skill and black belt level Judo to come up with his patented move, which is a powerful and explosive takedown.
Once he has his opponent on the ground they are at a distinct disadvantage against Filho, who has won seven of his sixteen fights via submission.
