The NHL season is right around the corner and training camp is in full-swing. Games have already started and cuts have already been made. The Penguins and Lightning are over in Europe playing some exhibition games. There has been quite a bit of news coming from the various NHL camps.

Jeff O’Neill Decided to call it quits. O’Neill a former 1st round pick of the Hartford Whalers decided to end his comeback attempt with the Carolina Hurricanes. I’m not shocked over the news as he was having trouble at the end of his career keeping up with the game and dealing with the air travel. I was not a fan of Jeff until I was working for Fox Sports and overheard him talking with the legendary Mike Lange in the locker. Jeff really showed that he knows teh game of hockey and showed Lange the respect he deserves. Something the Penguins have not as they have relegated him to the radio broadcast.

The Ducks Get rid of Mathieu Schneider to Keep Team Teemu. The Ducks Dealt Mathieu Schneider to the Atlanta Thrashers for Ken Klee and wingers Brad Larsen and Chad Painchaud. While Atlanta fans are thinking they got the key to a Stanley Cup run, I don’t think Schneider is all he is made out to be. He is 38 and makes over $5 million a year. he will struggle to top the 39 points he put up last season with the much more loaded Ducks.

The Chicago Blackhawks Put the Bulin Wall on Waivers. The Chicago Blackhawks goalie Nikolai Khabibulin cleared waivers and talks of a trade continues. When Chicago signed Huet this off-season there was much speculation as to what would happen with Khabibulin. There are a few teams that might be interested in bringing him in (Los Angeles?, Toronto?) if most of his salary is picked up.

A few other items of notes:

- Robert Lang gets traded to Montreal
- Sergei Gonchar is out 4-6 months
- Roberto Luongo is the new Canucks Captain
- Reggie Dunlop passed away after a long and storied hockey career
