The Ryan Babel Rap

When footballers and music combine, the result is almost universally a car-crash. Yet Ryan Babel has not been deterred by the football one-hit wonders hall of shame, as the Liverpool winger laid down his swear-fuelled rap for Dutch hip-hop radio station, 101Barz.

For some, Babel’s use of colourful language in his lyrics may come as some surprise from a person who has previously given the impression that he is an alter boy.

Babel has gone public about his devotion to Christianity, quoted as saying “I believe it is God who has given me the talent and the opportunity to be successful. If you misuse the things you have been given, God has the ability to take your talent away. I don’t go to church every week. We travel a lot in this job and I can’t always understand what is being said in church here but I do have a church back in Holland that I visit whenever I can.”

But it’s hard to find the scriptures’ teachings in Babel’s words, as, according to the translation of the lyrics (Babel raps in Dutch), we are told: “Yo can see this n***a with number 19, Ya’ll can f**k off, I f**k with a whole team, Ya’ll can talk but you don’t get anything with it, Ya’ll can’t be like me, my status is too high.”

Interesting stuff.

Abdicating from the judgment police however, it must be said that Babel can definitely hold his own as an MC. A record deal may be wishful thinking, but if New Order fancy a comeback in the world of footy anthems, they may well have found their new John Barnes.
