In many ways, Christian’s injury last fall was the best thing that could have happened to him. Injuries are never a good thing but sometimes they can be beneficial to a career. Most times absence does make the heart grow fonder.
We have seen many superstars career get jump started after an injury. Triple H, John Cena and Edge all returned from major injuries to win the Royal Rumble which in turn, put them in Wrestlemania’s main event. Under normal circumstances, each superstar would have probably not won the event.
So what does Christian have to do with any of this? I believe Christian can benefit as well from his injury and can also jump-start his career. Captain Charisma had to be taken off of television so Alberto Del Rio and his arm-breaker were given credit for putting Edge’s little buddy on the sideline.
During Christian’s recovery, a spectacular thing happened: Alberto Del Rio won the Royal Rumble. I wish I could have witnessed Christian’s reaction when this happened because I believe he was filled with extreme joy, to say the least. Many might say, well why would Christian be happy that the man who took him out won the Royal Rumble? Well, why wouldn’t he be?
Surely, Christian thought to himself that as soon as he recovered from his injury, a feud with Del Rio would ensue. As Del Rio decided to use his Rumble win to challenge World Champion Edge, Christian was probably smiling from ear to ear. Not only did he have history with Alberto Del Rio, but he also had an even longer history with the Rated R Superstar.
Captain Charisma was probably thinking the same thing that many of us were thinking: he would be placed in a triple threat match with Del Rio and Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship. Christian would finally receive the chance to battle for the World Title at Wrestlemania.
It has not happened yet. Christian finally did intervene in the Del Rio-Edge feud at Elimination Chamber when he attacked Del Rio, while making the save on Edge. Since then, he has demanded a match-up against Del Rio, only to be declined by the Mexican Aristocrat. Christian has come in contact with Del Rio numerous times. The former creepy little bastard has even teamed up with former partner Edge to take on Del Rio and his NXT protégé.
Christian has received one of his wishes as he was inserted into the Edge-Del Rio feud, however, he has not received what he truly desires. Christian has not been inserted into their match at Wrestlemania. To make matters worse, it is currently unclear as to what Captain Charisma will do at the big event.
There is under three weeks remaining for Wrestlemania and only three Smackdown’s remain. One would think that since he has not yet been inserted into the World Title Match, that he will most likely not be involved in the match. It’s a shame since it makes perfect sense.
Not only is the time expiring as far as Wrestlemania approaching, but what also may be expiring is Captain Charisma’s legitimate chances of becoming a World Champion in WWE. This current feud with Del Rio is the closest he has been to the world title picture since returning with the company. One more demotion to the mid-card and Christian’s career may never make it back out.
Some people may argue that if Del Rio defeats Edge and becomes the new World Champion at Wrestlemania then naturally a feud with Christian over said title would follow. That may be a possibility as well. What no one can deny is that Christian would fit perfectly into a match with Del Rio and Edge at the showcase of the immortals. Now is the time for WWE to capitalize on the situation and finally allow Christian to break through the glass ceiling.
There is also no doubt that time is running out for Christian. Captain Charisma is not getting any younger and will never have a better opportunity to become World Champion. All the pieces have fallen in place and all the right men are involved in the title picture. The clock is ticking, and the window of opportunity is slowly closing. Will Christian and more importantly, WWE, take advantage of the situation? It’s now or never.
