Christian is perhaps the greatest superstar to have never won a WWE World Title. He was part of one of the greatest tag teams of all time with his best friend, Edge, being seven-time tag team champions. He helped revolutionize the ladder match, and made TLC famous with the Hardyz and Dudleyz. He is one of the greatest mid-card stars WWE has had, being a three-time Intercontinental Champion, nine-time Tag Team Champion, former European, Hardcore, and Light Heavyweight Champion, and a two-time ECW Champion, one of the longest-reigning of all time.
Yet, the Big One itself has completely eluded Captain Charisma, the World Title, a championship he has barely had a chance at. But perhaps, now more than ever, he will finally get that opportunity at the World Title.
Six months ago, Christian started a feud with Alberto Del Rio, taking personal exception to how Del Rio injured Rey Mysterio. Christian tried to get Del Rio into a match with him, but the Mexican Aristocrat refused every time. Many thought that Christian would be just a stepping stone for Del Rio, used to get the man over.
But then he tore his pectoral muscle, becoming injured in the process. The WWE had Del Rio take credit for the injury, having the man attack Christian and destroy his arm. Christian was taken out for six months from WWE programming as a result of the injury. But that injury may have been a blessing in disguise for Captain Charisma.
Months passed as Christian was recovering. Edge won the World Heavyweight Title, and many of us were clamoring for a match between the two for the Title at WrestleMania 27, the 10-year anniversary of their famous TLC II match. But that didn't happen as Del Rio won the Royal Rumble and stated he would face the World Champion at WrestleMania.
Some hope was restored as Ziggler was taken out of the SmackDown Elimination Chamber match, and many thought Christian would be the one who would take the spot, but that was dashed again when it was Big Show who took the spot. Edge won the match and retained his title, but was attacked afterwards by Del Rio. All hope seemed lost, but then Christian's music hit, and Captain Charisma himself came out, and laid out Del Rio with a Killswitch.
Ever since then, Christian has been a part of the Edge/Del Rio feud on the Road to WrestleMania, even continuing his own feud with the Mexican Aristocrat. This is the closest Christian has possibly been to the World Title and the main event at WrestleMania. There have been endless rumors that the World Title Match could end up being a Triple Threat between Edge, Alberto Del Rio, and Christian.
The question is this though: Should Christian be in the World Title picture at WrestleMania?
This seems to be a quiet, yet very powerful going on, and quite honestly, I'm surprised at the lack of articles about this. Like all debates, there are supporters and opposers on a certain idea.
Supporters of Christian participating in the World Title match say that Edge vs Alberto Del Rio alone is not WrestleMania material, and doesn't have the 'Mania feeling to it. Adding Christian into the mix would give it that needed feeling. And it would be appropriate, as Edge and Christian won the Tag Title in the famous TLC II match 10 years ago at WrestleMania X-Seven, now facing off for the World Title on the Grandest Stage of Them All. They say he deserves this chance after all he's done for the business..
Opposers, though, say that adding Christian would take the focus away from Alberto Del Rio, and focus instead on Edge and Christian. For a youth movement, this would not be good at all, as it would kill Del Rio instantly. They also say since Del Rio won the Royal Rumble, he's earned the opportunity and not Christian, and is entitled to a sole one-on-one match for the World Title Match. Captain Charisma should solely be used as an obstacle and platform-rised for Del Rio and Edge until after WrestleMania.
What is my opinion on this debate? Christian should be added to the World Title match at WrestleMania. Why? Because even though we would see Edge and Christian interact, their hatred and focus would be at Del Rio, for his attacks and injuring of the two, so Del Rio would be featured at the heart of it. Also, Royal Rumble winners like Benoit and Mysterio ended up having Michaels and Orton added to their title matches, maybe to add to the hype and depth of the match, but they both ended up winning the World Title.
Christian doesn't even have to win the World Title, although I would very much like him to. Even if Del Rio were to win in the situation, even though I would be pissed off at the moment, all Christian needs to do is to show he belongs there.
A former WWE employee stated that Christian is seen only as a midcard worker to help guys get over by Creative. Well, if given the chance at WrestleMania 27, Christian can prove them wrong. He can put on the performance of a lifetime, and even if he doesn't win, he can prove to Creative that he deserves and belongs in the main-event, and can enjoy the last few years of his career with great success.
WrestleMania is the platform where men are immortalized, and careers are launched, defined, and are given the moments they deserve. Yet ultimately, what the final setup for the World Title match falls upon WWE.
I know there has been a "leaked" WrestleMania card, and that Vince McMahon may hate Christian for leaving for TNA and can hold grudges for a long time, but let's face facts. We cannot assume rumors are true until they happen. We thought Sheamus/HHH and Barrett/Taker would happen at WM, but we got Taker/HHH instead, so don't assume anything until the final card is made. And also, even Vince McMahon can't ignore the goldmine he has with Christian and Del Rio at the moment. It gives great depth and a better big time feeling on the Road to WrestleMania.
I won't be surprised if Christian is not added, though, but I will scream for joy if it does. We still have two weeks left worth of WWE programming before WrestleMania is finalized, so anything can happen. In my opinion, he will be added into the match on the last SmackDown, so Del Rio and Edge will be focused on, but Christian can still be fully featured as well. Still we can't assume anything just yet.
So I pose this question to all you readers: Should Christian be added to World Title Match at WrestleMania 27? Or should he just be used as elevation for Edge and Del Rio?
