Barclays English Premiership 2008/09 .. as close as ever!
The English Premiership 08/09 is set to be the one of the most competitive years that England has seen for a long while now. Up until now the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea have dominated the Premiership securing top places every year without failure. However this year seems to be different as most clubs in the Premiership have strengthened their teams ahead of the new season by spending a considerable amount of money.
The takeover of Manchester City by Dubai Group Abu Dhabi has already sent warning signs to the top 4 that there is a new big team in town. Will money make the difference in the Premiership and will City have the same effect that Chelsea had when Roman Abramovich took over? Clubs like Aston Villa, Sunderland, Tottenham Hotpur who do not have the spending power like that of Man City have been very impressive in the transfer market this season. Aston Villa for beginners have secured big signings such as Brad Friedel and James Milner , not forgetting the fact that they managed to keep Gareth Barry at Villa for another season. Sunderland have signed two ex Liverpool players Djibril Cisse and El Hadj Diouf, as well as Tainio, Malbranque, A. Ferdinand and David Healy which are great signings on Paper. Tottenham Hotspur were also extremely busy in the transfer market selling and buying. They have lost their two biggest players Robbie Keane to Liverpool and Dimitar Berbatov to Man Utd but have strengthened their team by signing players such as th highly rated Luka Modric, Roman Pavulyuchenko, David Bentley, and Giovanni Do Santos, all very attacking minded players. The top 4 in the premiership have also been very busy i nthe transfer market with Liverpool signing Keane, Dossena, Degen, Ngog, and Riera to add an attacking approach to their game, Man utd have signed Dimitar Berbatov , Arsenals major signing of the season has been Samir Nasi and Chelsea have acquired the signings of Deco and Bosingwa.
Six games into the 08/09 Premiership and we have already seen the class that Chelsea have exhibited, remaining a firm favourite to win the premiership. Defending champions Man Utd have not had the greatest of starts however last year they had the same start and ended up winning the premiership. Liverpool and Arsenal have both been fantastic this season with Liverpool sitting in second place and Arsenal in fourth place. Everybody needs to be reminded however that the premiership is a marathon not a sprint and one can only begin to judge the teams in January some time. Will Man united carry on their impressive run and equal Liverpools record 18th Premiership title, or will the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool compete this season with the ever mighty man united. Will Man city become the bigger team in Manchester this season..we will have to wait and see, in what promises to be one of the mos t intriguing seasons the Premiership has ever had.
