Top Ten Teams

1) Oklahoma - The Sooners keep right on rolling.

2) LSU - Last year's defending champs right on target.

3) Texas - Playing like they have something to prove.

4) Alabama - A nice win, but my guess is they won't be here long.

5) Penn State - What can we say about Joe Pa's kids this year?

6) BYU - The more turbulence in front of them, the better for the Cougars.

7) Tulsa - Two non-BCS schools get in?

8) South Florida - A win is a win is a win.

9) Missouri - With that defense they aren't going far.

10) Utah - Parity is here.

I Told You So...Ten Times

1) Clemson is overrated. I did a double take when you guys ranked them...again.

2) Gators can't run the ball. Gimmicks only get you so far.

3) Nebraska can't beat anyone good. Why do you think they schedule so many stiffs?

4) Iowa can't cover a spread. Apparently they forgot how to win games as well.

5) Clemson is overrated. Maybe it will stick if you guys hear it enough times.

6) Texas is really good. Take notice; Colt McCoy is better than we thought.

7) Duke is better this year. Looks like my bowl prediction may actually be right.

8) Virginia Tech isn't done yet. Beamer and Foster have won with a lot less than this.

9) Oregon can score with anyone at QB. Their fifth-string QB has more TD passes than the entire Auburn team.

10) Tulsa is going to run the table. Any doubters still out there?

Ten Places I'm Glad I'm Nowhere Near today

1) Gainesville - Known for being pretty sore losers.

2) Jimmy John's Jail Cell - Sucks to be him is my guess.

3) Lincoln, Neb. - Such nice people to be fooled again.

4) Dolphin Stadium - Actually I'm always glad when I'm not near that place; bring back the OB.

5) Knoxville, Tenn. - Where's David Cutcliffe when you need him?

6) Skip Holtz's Agent's Office - Getting awfully quiet all of the sudden.

7) Los Angeles - Not a good weekend for college football fans. I'll leave it at that.

8) Las Vegas - Wouldn't have been a good day for me yesterday.

9) Toledo, Ohio - Not that it's ever a great day to be there, but today must be extra bad.

10) Fayetteville, Ark.- I think the Hogs just gave up another TD.

Let's Give It Up For The Smart Guys...

1) Duke - You guys are good.

2) Northwestern - Nice job at Iowa.

3) Navy - Highest graduation rate in D-1 and a win over Wake.

4) Stanford - Winners on the road over Washington.

5) Cal - Whooped up on Colorado State.

6) Rice

Great read Mitch! I always look forward to this one. What a week!

The hospital has been able to cut my oxygen back, and they think I should be breathing on my own in a day or so. The game over-loaded my nervous system and I snapped. It could have been a lot worse. The doc said if we hadn't scored in the second half, he thinks I would've been a goner!

The bye week will give me time to recoup until the Dawgs strap it on again.

POTD for helping me pull through with your quips.

Thanks Ghost, something tells me if they win out they'll be where they want to be. The could have just laid down but really tried and just let the hole get too deep. I have seen that AJ Green play before except it cam e in the form of Sean Taylor being run down from behind by Maurice Clarrett and while the Canes came back to tie that one they could have won in regulation if it never happened. I also saw it when Lamar Thomas was run down by George Teague, must be something in that Alabama water.

Great read, Mitch. I've just got a couple of questions for you.

"10) Notre Dame in A BCS Game - Someone do something then."

I hope you aren't serious. They aren't even sniffing the Top 25 right now, and came up well short in their biggest test of the season.

What was the over/under on the attendance at the Miami/UNC game? If it had been at 400, I would've taken the under as soon as I flipped on the game. Many thousands of people missed a great finish.

I hope I'm not serious but if they win the minimum they are in, no doubt about it.
I would have guessed under before the game, it will be intersting to see what it is next week for FSU, My guess is 60,000+

And thus will continue the nation's longest bowl losing streak...

For the sake of their program and fans, they need to miss the BCS this year and go to a good bowl that they could actually win.

Win the minimum? With only 9 wins, Notre Dame won't be anywhere near the top 14. Also, contrary to popular belief, ND hasn't gone to a BCS bowl every year they were eligible (2002).

    Mitch,

One thing you forgot..................with our luck... Ohio State, the MOST overrated team in America for the last three years, will play for the National Title again. Enjoyed your take. BTW... ACC is 3-0 against Big 12 this year.

Also no one should have been that surprised that Georgia was going to get beat. Wofford had more total yards against South Carolina that Georgia did.

Also no one should have been surprised Flordia was going to struggle. A win at home over a VERY young Miami team and a win over Tennessee in which; Tennessee had more first downs and yards than Florida, clouded our perception of the Gators. Keep in mind that UCLA beat the Vols and then the Bruins turned around and got beat by 40 plus points by BYU. This makes the Florida win VERY unimpressive over UT and should have sent warning signs to us all that Florida was right for the picking.

Tommy Bowden will be coaching at Clemson in 2009 because of his buyout. Clemson does not have a law school or medical school. Frankly the school lacks the big time donors to buy him out. He could however, be forced to fire some of his assisstants.
Phillip Fulmer does puzzle me somewhat. After his firely press conference I figrued they would show up and score..........but alas, where his Cutcliffe... OOO he is 3-1 at Duke.... If I am not mistaken Fulmer got a nice extenstion after winning the East last year. So he is not going anywhere any time soon either.

VERY good read... your best since i have been on this sight.

Thanks Jay, I think Fulmer will be gone and Bowden will "step down" and maybe take a "special assistant" job somewhere? He can stay as long as he likes though because he's the best source of material out there..

Another great Ten top Tens! I love this series Mitch. You never fail to crack me up. My favorite line this week:

"8) North Texas - Just cancel the rest of your games if you aren't even going to try."

    and

"5) Pete Carroll claps a lot. Hey Pete, knock it off or I'll start calling you "Clappy.""

    Hysterical!

And believe me... no one wants to be in Toledo. Even on a good day.

ohio state beats wisconsin, and oh yeah, Joe Pa's team has never scored more than 10 points in a game in Columbus ever!

the outright big ten title is still going to go through columbus.

dont let Ohio State's slow start fool you. That was chemistry dingbats, not a bad team. They still have more NFL talent than anyone this side of USC. Once rolling, they will manhandle people, starting with buckey badger

haha that was a great read. very entertaining!!!! I love clever stuff like this, I look forward to reading more. HOWEVER, your top 10 is accurate for the most part. Tulsa and Utah are jokes....USC or Georgia would beat them by 20 at least.... I understand your thinking about their record but I go more by the better overall team.

I know, I don't really put out a top ten teams on my site until very late but I just rank them because I know a lot of those teams play each other anyway and it will sort itself out. It doesn't have much bearing on anything at this point.

It almost took a month, but the college football season has finally started.

Hey Mitch, congrats for giving Clausen some props. I'm sure it isn't easy for a Miami fan. Speeking of Miami, I'm not familiar with the city/area. Why did it look like the Canes traded in the Orange Bowl for the Emeral Bowl? Yeesh! That's so unfortunate.

The Orange Bowl was dangerously old and unsafe and as sad as it was to see it go it had to be done because the city who owned the place wasn't going to put in the renovations. Miami may have the home stadium furthest from campus of any team in the country.
I thought the over the shoulder catches for TD's were some amazingly well thrown passes by Claussen. I still don't like it when he changes into a referee and cheerleader..

    Mitch,
I'm glad you like OU's stadium! We had to pay a price for renovations though. The millionaire family's last name is Gaylord. I think of Meet the Parents every time I hear that.

If GameDay doesn't come to the OU-Texas game in two weeks, barring upsets by Baylor and Colorado, something is wrong with their college football game ranking criteria.

That game should decide half of the title game.
When I saw that on TV (i have a 61 inch HD) it was unbelievable. I watch probably 35-50 games a week and that was the first time I've ever said that about a stadium I saw on TV. What size is that TV that they have? I could clearly see the picture from the overhead shots, like crystal clear and it didn't seem to be the focus of the stadium, just a nice addition to it.

Ah, it was the new HD screen in the south endzone that stunned you. It is a beautiful thing. I found an article that says it's 113.5 feet wide and 32.5 feet tall, which totals 3,689 square feet.

Bama is good..........but Clemson and Georgia get WAY too much love from the media. Those are the best two teams Bama has played so far. Keep in mind Wofford moved the ball better against South Carolina then Georgia did and Clemson lost to Maryland...........

Bama is a very good team, but they are yet to play a real top 20 team.

Jay- are you on drugs? this comment is absolutely ridiculous....

"Bama is a very good team, but they are yet to play a real top 20 team. "

Are you foolishly suggesting that UGA was/is NOT a "real" top 20 team? Are you insane?

They man-handled ASU after a lengthy plane ride to the west coast, they have the second best QB in the country, the best RB in the country, and an amazing defense.

Yes they came out horribly flat, at home, but they manage to put up 30 points in the second half, while holding Bama to only 10. How the game was going, if college football had a 5th Qtr.(mathematically impossible) UGA would have came back to win the game.

I'm as far from a Dawg fan as one can be, but to say Bama didn't play a top 20 team Saturday night is borderline stupid.

    good stuff mitch,

i'm kinda with nic. bama went a long way to clinching the west on saturday. i know it sounds crazy but i say that because besides LSU and AU there aren't many teams on their schedule that can give them a run as long as they keep playing this way.

i'm starting to think that even if bama loses to LSU, their SEC record will be better.

of course, the expectations are heating up with a top 5 ranking, we'll see how bama handles it. players just need to buy into what saban is selling. it looks like that is starting to happen.

Great article. However, OU's stadium is not as nice as Penn State's Beaver Stadium. Also, Kirk Herbstreit wasn't at the UGA vs. Bama game because he was at the Penn State game. He wanted to announce that game and ESPN let him...the Penn State vs. Illinois game was much closer and much better, even though Penn State dominated, (which is why it was better). I agree it is more fun when ND loses.
On another note, my brother is pissed because he lost $5,000. He bet on PSU and the spread was 16, and PSU won by 14. They should've won by more, but they didn't play that well, and they could've won by more if the would've kicked a 50 yard field goal instead of a fake field goal punt. Then they would've won by 17. The pooch punt was bouncing and a player stopped the ball by diving on it, but the ball popped out and went into the endzone for a touchback. They should've kicked and made the field goal so that my brother could've made some money!

Another great article Mitch, but of course I have a ? for you-

"4) Alabama - A nice win, but my guess is they won't be here long."

What the heck is this? Bama has flat out dominated Clemson and UGA, and BOTH of them were AWAY games! Also beat them by a combined total of 35 points. They only allow an average of 13 pts. a game!

With that kind of defensive play, a QB with a good arm, legs, and decision making skills....I don't see them stumbling but once!maybe...

Honestly, I think the only chance they have to lose will be to LSU(but they do play @Bama so..), and finish the season 11-1 and they WILL be in the top 10! AUB will be a close game too, of course, but AUB's QB troubles will be to much of a problem.

Carson, It's talk like that which makes me believe a loss is coming sooner rather than later for the Tide. They played a great game, a game for the ages, one of the greatest halves of all time. They are one or two bad bounces from losing as is everyone. They play some really good teams and if JPW can play like he did Saturday the rest of the season I will be as shocked as anyone.
