WWE: What's Ahead in the World of Wrestling for Edge?

John KindelanFeb 8, 2011

The sites are swirling with news of retirement for The Rated R Superstar, due to him stating after a house show in Toronto, "I might only have a couple more of these visits left in me, and I want to end my career here in Toronto. Maybe if Mania is here." This alludes to the fact that not only will Edge be retiring, but it may be soon as Toronto may be the site of WrestleMania in four years.

In my series of articles on Edge I have covered greatness of his past, his current path to get the World Heavyweight Championship and what may be in store when it comes to different matches leading up to WrestleMania.

Unless something happens at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view this month, the current plan is to see Alberto Del Rio take on Edge on the grandest stage in Atlanta. Though this match is set the ICW continues to clamor to have Edge versus a returning Christian for the world title.

But does Captain Charisma have the chops to headline WrestleMania? The same can be asked about newcomer Alberto Del Rio; however, if we all recall, it was senor Del Rio who took Christian out of action for some time.

I'm going on record as to make the prediction right now that if Christian is well enough to get in the ring, we will get a triple threat match for the world title Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Christian. The possibilities following a match like this are much more vast than a simple one on one rivalry and it also helps all participants with the actual workload in the ring.

Having the three of them would also help with the push of the popularity of the match; the marketing of a newcomer versus Edge for the title won't get the draw as much as a long-lasting tag team fighting for the belt. Throw Del Rio into that mix and you give him instant credibility.

Past WrestleMania we can then see an ongoing feud with the three of these participants; Edge can get a lighter workload as he is hoping to retire and may need some rest for his body; Christian will need to come back at a lighter schedule with him returning from an injury; and Del Rio in the mix with two of the men listed as two of the greatest tag team champions of all time will bring his name more to the fore front.

Outside of Del Rio and Christian there are at least four others that Edge should try and rival with before he hangs up the boots.

1. John CenaThe Cena vs. Edge feud really gave birth to the Rated R Superstar on a whole new level, their matches have become legendary and the antics that took place along with that feud are some that will not be forgotten. Between being tossed off a ladder through multiple tables to being tossed into the local harbor, Edge and Cena made Monday nights awesome.

2. Randy Orton—Rated RKO was almost as great a team as The Brood. They were a team of champions that became tag-team champions, if that makes sense. Their styles are so complementary, their chemistry in the ring just perfect and the matches and mic work they had with one another are on par with Batman and The Joker.

3. Triple H—I wish I could remember the night it took place, but Edge had just returned from an injury and he came out to the ring to interrupt Hunter and make his claim for the top spot. The feud, however, never happened. Seeing these two go at it in a battle for the title or even chasing whomever has the title would be great to see.

4. Chris Jericho—Again, these two with similar backgrounds, similar styles, skills and mic work would have an epic battle. If Edge were to end his career at Mania in Toronto, then it should be against Jericho. The last time they met at the big event Jericho walked out the winner and stopped Edge from being a winner from the previous Royal Rumble, walking away with the gold. The two Canadians would cause the arena to explode with mass confusion on who they would be rooting for.

Now let's look even further beyond Mania, and even beyond the WWE universe for the Ultimate Opportunist. If Edge were to retire in a few years he has already established that he can do some minor acting roles. He appeared in Highlander End Game and an episode of Sanctuary on SyFy. He has a movie in post production called Breaking the Rules with Jamie Kennedy and Jenifer Esposito; with hope it will look a bit better than The Chaperone (groan) and turn out a bit better than Kuncklehead.

This path for Edge seems very familiar: work to the top, leave while at the top of your game and then "retire" early and healthy. Sounds a lot like what Chris Jericho did, venturing off to try new things, walking away from the sport, and only two years later getting the bug to want to come back again. Jericho has his band to keep him busy but as he stated in his book Undisputed; he realized he was still in his 30s and had some gas left in the tank. If Edge retires, will it be permanent? I'd wager no; would we see him over in TNA working a lighter schedule? I don't find that likely, with everything the WWE gave him and the issues he saw Christian go through I don't think he'd consider that an option.

Whatever lies ahead for our Rated R Superstar I'm sure he'll spear it with as much tenacity, humor and dedication as he's given us in the squared circle.
